I do not see it as the same. The SCOTUS decides queers can be husband and wife in a particular state does not mean the rest of the country needs to accede to their madness.

It’s a state license. Her job is to hand out state licenses. If she can’t do it in good conscience, she needs to find another job.

It’s really that simple.

Whether SCOTUS was wise or not is another question completely.

If the state required her to put stars on Jews would she be remiss in refusing to do so?

She should find another job if she doesn’t want to do the job she is assigned to. It’s really that simple.

If she doesn’t want to hand out licenses to people, don’t get a job in the license bureau. If she has a problem with marking Jews, then she should find another job.

so there is no room for being principled in our workplaces? the answer is just to slink off to somewhere where they don’t make demands contrary to our beliefs?

There is always room for reasonable accommodation of sincere beliefs.

It’s just hard to argue that when you are working for the state and/or the core function of the job requires it.

The Baptist who wants to work in the supermarket, but won’t ring up beer or lottery tickets needs to find another role to play. (Or get over the fact that people make choices and you aren’t morally culpable for others’ choices.)

What if everybody at Auschwitz quit rather than do those jobs?

I’m all for people having principles. Not so much for refusing to to a job while still wanting to get paid for the job.

unfortunately, there will always be the unprincipled who will do the job, no matter how heinous. So the answer is evil remains unchecked by principle.

People have gone to prison for doing what the state required of them. There is a higher truth than state law. Employees are ultimately required to stand with higher truth, not with the law.

If no one had been willing to turn on the gas at Auschwitz no one would have been killed.

Then better to state your principle and leave, rather than stick around and be complicit. Or shot in the head for disobedience.

They can stand out of the way, while looking for a new job.

Seriously, would you feel the same if the clerk refused to hand out gun permits cause she felt a moral compulsion to resist "gun violence?"

Seriously? Yes, I would. Principle is more important than rules. If the job requires me to violate my principles I must stand for changing the rules, not quitting my job. Ultimately it is principle that must stand. When principles are in conflict a state of conflict exists. Better to have conflict than blind obedience to bad law.

Can you conceive of any scenario where you would stand up for your beliefs? what would it take for you personally to feel called upon to stand up?

You don’t seem to understand my point. Quitting the job is the way that you stand up for your principles!

I won’t do this!
You have to do this.
I quit!

You’re totally OK then with court clerks or sheriffs disobeying laws in order to not give out gun permits because they have a “belief”?

That’s anarchy.

How is this different from a clerk refusing to give out a license to a mixed race couple cause he doesn’t believe in miscegenation? Do you stand by any disruption of orderly gov’t if a single person claims a conscience objection?

You still at it?
Do you honestly believe an employee must surrender their principles at the door?
Never mind. Obviously you do.
I don’t.
