I’ve been interested in radio ever since my father told me about building his first crystal set - that would have been in the early 20th century. Then my brother built one, and it was amazing to hear voices coming through some simple wound wires.
I was waylaid by the Internet, in its early years - billboards, Usenet; in a way, it was the same: ‘voices’ coming out of the ether. But I always wanted to get back to Ham, and now at a very ripe old age, I’m trying.
Lately, I’ve been listening to the local repeater feed over the Internet. And, the thing I really like about Ham Radio now, is that it’s a very CIVIL culture. People are polite, gentlemanly, ladylike - it’s a culture with rules, and people follow the rules. And there’s a lot of interpersonal bonding, appreciation; simple human CARING.

it is a different culture that, say chat rooms, isn’t it? ;)
my husband was talking to a guy in Italy via ham radio for years. He was from Trieste, which us where my mother is from and half my family is still there. When we went to visit, he and Bruno met at a cafe. That’s my only ham story, but it was pretty neat.
