A Lake Elsinore man could lose his hand after being bitten by a rattlesnake he was holding and taking pictures with, he and his mother said Thursday.
Alex Gomez found the 4-foot-long snake in a field behind his home on Monday and decided to pick it up.
The 36-year-old could be seen holding the snake and even wrapping it around his neck in photographs provided to KTLA by his mother.
At some point after the photos were taken, the rattlesnake attacked Gomez, biting him in the hand.

Finding a garter or rat snake on your property and letting it go to help with the local rodent population is one thing. A rattlesnake or a copperhead are another matter. That’s a situation where a sharp garden hoe or a .410 shotgun come into play. Some creatures (and some folks) you just can’t trust as neighbors.
I may be biased, but.....
I don't think adults were this stupid when I was a kid. I honestly can't remember grown ups being this damned dumb when I was growing up.
Are there any Freepers in their 60s or 70s that can verify this?
I honestly think that people are getting dumber and dumber. It's very scary.
What. The. Hell.
LOL
This reminded me of a viral “Cobra Pit” video on Youtube. I will provide link below. It is hilarious, but be forewarned, the language the narrator uses is not for children or the overly sensitive:
Darwin Award
Did You make a belt or something out of it ?
Too nice a skin to waste IMO
You could have made some nice little steaks also!
Living on the river I bet you see lots of cottonmouths. I really don’t like them.
No I just dumped him in the woods. I am sure something got him. I did save the rattles. There were only 7 or 8 which was a little disappointing.
How do you say “Darwin Award” in Mexican?
Illegal alieno gets his fifteen minutes of fame.
Estado Unidos. What a country!
Warning labels. The snake didn't have one, and the cell phone manufacturer didn't warn about not taking selfies with snakes. Guess who he's gonna sue.
Yes, you're right, people are getting more stupid.
That and the age of the selfie; trying to come up with the boldest and most outlandish picture.
“There ain’t no cure for stupid” Ron White.
“I honestly think that people are getting dumber and dumber.”
It’s been at least 40 years of liberal government schooling. OF COURSE people are dumber.
The man picked up a very nasty native of the Southern Californian desert, a Mojave Green rattlesnake.
He is fortunate to be present, because they can be a ‘two-stepper’, as opposed to David Carradine’s ‘five-stepper five finger palm technique’, as in ‘Kill Bill 2’.

I heard even after theyre dead they can have a bite reflex for about an hour.
It’s because of all the reality animal shows on TV where people pick up snakes and catch gators. The idiots ignore the “Don’t try this at home” warnings before each show.
My daddy would have whipped my butt if he’d caught me messing with a snake. In fact, one time my brother caught a cotton mouth and put it on the ground with a king snake to watch the king snake kill the cotton mouth. It did it’s job. Then we killed the king snake. Daddy came home and saw the dead king snake and wore us out with his belt.
Reminds me of the guy near Beaumont who went swimming with the alligators a while back. His last words, according to Michael Berry, were “F... them alligators.”
I have a .38 with shot caps hanging 3ft from me for that very reason. I fill the shot caps with air rifle pellets.
Never know when a copper head will be waiting by the steps.
“Dont Mess With Snakes, Advises Man Bitten by Rattlesnake While Taking Selfie”
Umm, the rest of US are not the ones who need that advice, genius!
