A dog is recovering after receiving deep scratches and lacerations on its body and neck during a scuffle with a bear in a residential neighborhood in between Leesburg and Eustis.
Kim Givens said she had let her Doberman named Bo out in the backyard of her home in the Wedgewood subdivision before they went to bed late Aug. 8. She said about 11:30 p.m. she saw Bo bolt from her backyard and go down the hill her home sits on. She opened the sliding-glass door and heard loud growling and "horrible mauling sounds."

"I knew it was the bear as soon as I heard those noises," said Givens, 46. "It was frightening. I don't ever want to hear those types of noises again."
Givens said she stayed inside and peered out her windows until the dog ran up to her back porch with injuries.
"He had these gashes in his neck and was bleeding a lot," she said. Bo also had deep puncture wounds on his side and scratches along his back but is expected to recover.
I'm glad your dog is OK, but if you knew there was a mama bear and cubs in the area, why would you let you dog run loose? The bear was doing what a mam bear does. protect her young. If these ******** people that continue to forget that you are living near wild creature and sometimes you...

It’s all part of being in the pack.
My son used to work for an emergency vet. The only dog he saw come in after tangling with a bear with all wounds in the front was “Vincer” (Convincer) a male Doberman. Vincer didn’t stop ‘til the bear broke off.
Some people do not deserve their dogs.
That’s why they excel at Schutzhund.
They are relentless and determined.
You say you “force them to leave”. At gun point? By banging on garbage cans? Fisticuffs?
Serving them with a restraining order usually does the trick.
How do you get bears to leave?
I surely did love mine. Drove across country with her and a .38 and never worried about a thing. :)
Know why Smokey the Bear never had kids?
Kids= cubs
Why?
There was a reason we hunted bears out of civilized areas. It’s because they are a danger to humans and our animals. We’re idiots.
Whenever his wife got hot, he (or Salamander) beat her out with a shovel.
Ex parte.
GMTA
I bet you didn’t.
Many years ago I lived in an apartment in town and I could walk through the urban jungle of the square at night and I felt like Moses, parting the sea.
Still do.
:D
How’d the bear come out?
Great feeling isn’t it? :) My girl was red with yellow eyes, and never barked. Just looked at people. They crossed the street to avoid her.
The dog should be carrying too!
Our Walmart strip is in front of what was McMansions but is now splendiferous Section 8 housing.
The local yutes like to patrol it with their Pibbles.
PetSmart is there and I need to go to get Seven’s preferred food so I have to shop there.
When I take “the kids” to the ‘toy store’, the yutes pick up their Pibbles and run.
“She got dem Devil Dogs!” is probably my favorite comment.
We shop unmolested.
And honestly, bad things hapen to people in that strip mall too often.
I don’t want to be one of them.
So...
