For the past couple of days, I have been getting little message windows from Apple offering me a free upgrade to Yosemite from my present Maverick O/S. They tout the Yosemite as being better, more stable, etc.
I am sure that there are some FReepers out there who are in a better position to evaluate Maverick vs Yosemite.
Should I take Apple up on their offer of the free upgrade to Yosemite, or should I avoid Yosemite like the plague recently found in the park?
Thank you for your valuable input.
I have not has any issues with it.
Apple Ping
On the whole, yes. The more simplistic, slightly cartoonish look and feel of Yosemite took a few days to get used to. I thought the first couple of versions of Yosemite were a little buggy, but by 10.10.3 I was recommending it to my most change-resistant friends and colleagues.
For me, Apple Mail was unusable under Mavericks — I ended up switching to Gmail for the year I used Mavericks. Yosemite fixed Apple Mail for me.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
By the way, you only have about three more weeks to do it before Apple replaces it with OS X.11 El Capitan an OS X.10 Yosemite won’t be available for download as easily.
Yes, do it. If for nothing else the security patches. But it is stable, and if you have idevices, the handoff/continuity features work quite well.
Nothing negative to report! Works for me!!! Upgraded when it was offered.
I run Yosemite 10.10.3 on a MacBook Pro. I work in IT and my MacBook goes with me everywhere I go and is used all day every day, nights and weekends. I have not rebooted since I installed this release 114 days ago. Solid as a rock. WiFi was flakey for me in earlier releases of Yosemite.
As for features, the continuity features are very useful if you have an iPhone and iPad.
I updated mine a couple weeks ago. Everything is different, so it takes a little getting used to and it is constantly trying to get me to do programs I am not used to, don’t know if I’ll need. I need to make a list of them and ask my son whether he thinks I’ll need them. There are features I really like such as the menu bar is now along the left side and clicks open...a lot easier to see what I have added to it than before. The page formats are cleaner. Runs well. I do not have as much trouble viewing youtube and other streaming things that I had before. You do have to wait for it to come up to the HTML5 once on youtube, then it comes up automatically after that. So far, I am pleased. I’m 67 next month, a female, so not considered by most to be tech savvy, although I do well enough. Personally, I find it a good program. I have not begun to use a lot of the features, but over time I will learn. Hope that helps.
I have an MBP circa 2013 (e.g. 4gb RAM). I use it just about every day for ruby programming for work. Before I upgraded to Yosemite the platform was extremely stable and I never had it crash. After upgrading to Yosemite I have had a few crashes and maybe 5 or so Safari crashes. I do drive it pretty much to max frequently so I’ve been looking at the new MBP with 16gb RAM. That should solve all of the problems I would expect.
Upgraded to Yosemite last spring.
No problems.
I have not had any functional issues, but I personally don’t like the flat look of the icons/dock, etc. (I upgraded from Mountain Lion and skipped Maverick). I wish they had optional looks because I prefer icons that have shape to them, not just flat.
I have a MBP 2012. Bought it used w/ Mavericks. Upgraded several months ago.
Oh, one thing , if you are using an earlier version of iWork, Yosemite will trash it. At least it did my Work ‘08. Can’t use Pages anymore.
Would love to revert back to Mavericks. Just don’t like Yosemite as well.
The biggest hit I’ve heard about Yosemite concerns Photo.
Somehow I retained iPhoto ,thankfully.
From what I’ve read, the new Photo rearranges your pics and other negative stuff.
I have 50+gigs of photos in albums and the thought of having to redo those curls my hair (that’s singular ).
My version of Yosemite is an older version but I’m reluctant to upgrade for fear it will mess with iPhoto.
I haven’t updated to it basically because I don’t have any devices to sync with it. I’ve got an iMac and MacBookPro. I’m still happy with what I’ve got.
You'll see a lot of negatives about everything under the sun. Anything bad that happens to anything is the fault of whatever the poster can point at.
On the other hand, as someone with a Mac hardware business since 1995, I can say that Yosemite is cleaner and faster running than previous operating systems, and a simple upgrade. My customer base is professional photographers and videographers. Pretty much all of them are running Yosemite at this point without complaint.
I use Safari, but I really don’t like it much, because it frequently crashes. Firefox never crashed that often, or even the dreaded I.E. My new MacBook Pro has Yosemite, but I haven’t used the MBP often enough to really get a feel for Yosemite.
My son has the same laptop as me and has had no problems.
I do not have a “smart” cell phone, just the basic slider. I also have a small digital camera. Is that what you mean by “I-devices”? My present system works well with the digital camera, in that I can take photos off the camera via cable and put them online.
Funny story when he asked me about upgrading, he called it Yo’s Mite. So, now we always call it that.
