After taking a “drive” up Old Dixie on Google Streetview, I’m fully on-board with renaming that road to “Barack Obama Highway”. It’s a perfect juxtaposition. The road itself is largely a string of vacant lots, interspersed occasionally with shady-looking storefronts for e-cigarettes and check cashing, a couple of dispirited light industry facilities, and a noticeable population of indigent working-age black males loitering around closed businesses and parking lots.

No! That is the street that my work depot is on. It’s bad enough that I have to worry about being car jacked every night, now I’ll have to be reminded of him even after he is gone.

And you used to have to actually do something worthwhile to get a Nobel prize.

In the Avoid section of every GPS should be MLK St. Dr. etc and Malcom X, Ceasar Chavez and now Obama.

You described it to a T without actually being there, except you probably couldn’t tell about the hookers, drugs and crime rate from the Google view.

The streetview pics look like they were taken close to noon local time. My guess is the hookers and drug dealers don’t really appear until later in the evening.

I don't see why local residents can't vote on the street names in their own town, Most residents care about the impact of their votes on property values. These people apparently are quite dense or they don't care.
BTW Old Dixie Highway now intersects Martin Luther King Blvd. A double whammy to insure property values will never recover for decades, if ever.

Why not "Trayvon Martin Trail"? Michael Brown Motorway"? Or the "Freddie Gray Freeway"?
Let's petition the city of Philadelphia to rename the Shyulkill Expwy Mumia Jamal Parkway. Or the Belt Parkway in Queens renamed John Gotti Blvd. Since David Berkowitz came from the Bronx rename the Cross Bronx Expy the Son of Sam Highway. Or why not an Al Capone Expwy in Chicago?

Yes, and per street view, as of April 2015, the NW and SW corners of that intersection are both vacant lots where small buildings (a liquor store and a church) have been demolished. The NE and SE corners (on the other side of a 3-track railway that parallels Old Dixie) appear to both be part of a container shipping company.
My guess is both those vacant lots see a lot of 5-minute stops by cars once the sun goes down.

Indeed. Also, avoid streets where welfare/unemployment offices are located as well. I used to see a black conga line leading to the front door of the welfare office in Lima, OH, back in the early 80’s.

I avoid all streets named Martin Luther King,
Arsenio Hall once joked that if you find yourself at the corner of MLK and Malcolm X Blvd, RUN!!! Near my old stomping grounds in Spring Valley, NY the intersection of MLK and Harriet Tubman Blvd is one of the worst neighborhoods in the lower Hudson Valley.
