180-Year-Old Baptist Church to Perform Same-Sex ‘Weddings,’ Ordain Homosexuals

A historic Baptist church in South Carolina that gave rise to the first president of the Southern Baptist Convention has adopted a new non-discrimination policy that will allow its leadership to perform same-sex “marriage” ceremonies and also ordain open homosexuals.

First Baptist Church of Greenville, South Carolina, was founded in 1831. Though the church’s organizer, William Bullein Johnson, became the first president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the church parted ways with the Southern Baptist Convention in 1999.

Late last year, members of the congregation gathered in small groups to discuss the church’s position on homosexuality. Eventually, the members concluded that “being open and welcoming to all people is part of the essential nature of our community of faith.”

Jim Dant, the senior minister, described the decision-making process as “a beautiful, internal discussion,” and says he doesn’t care what others think about the congregation’s unorthodox viewpoints on sexuality.

Dant believes the Bible’s teachings on family values are not applicable today.

Though most members reportedly supported the decision, other Christians in the area expressed dismay at the church’s departure from biblical Christianity.

“I can’t believe the stance that First Baptist Church of Greenville is taking on this same-sex marriage abomination,” Nancy Goodwin, a resident of nearby Simpsonville, wrote in a letter to The Greenville News. “Evidently they have just thrown out the words of God on this subject. The idea that a gay man can teach a boys’ class is so wrong.”

“They say, ‘What we believe about marriage and family is culturally driven, not biblically driven,’” she continued. “Wonder what Bible they’re using. Certainly not the one I use. This is so sad. This church needs our prayers.”

I said to myself, good luck with that. Well, they did. The communists now run all of the churches just as they do the schools.

Apparently, they apostatized well over a decade ago if the SBC spewed them out in 1999. Capitualtion to sexual deviancy isn’t the first sign of a compromised doctrine, by a long shot.

The Baptist Church that allows this type of disobedience is saying that they are just a business catering to their client’s needs. If the scripture gets in their way, they disregard it like when you pick and choose what you want in a salad bar. There is plenty of scripture about such disobedience. They need a visit from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Thanks for posting that... Looks like there is no honest way to combat that unless people speak up after it’s too late and compile their own data. This explains why a tiny majority can be so powerful.

In an SBC church, the countertactic that should work is for someone to speak up and say: "Why are we breaking up into different groups? We're one church, one congregation, one community. Let's all read what the Bible has to say about it (Genesis, Leviticus, Romans) and then discuss it as a family."

If that person is contradicted, just say: "Breaking into small groups is a technique that social engineers use to change a larger group's beliefs. Every group that we are broken into will be lead by someone who wants to change the congregation's views. Each group leader will have a happy attitude and an emotional argument for his point of view and will make anyone who disagrees feel badly for "ruining the conciliatory mood" and "hurting feelings." In order to make the leader feel better, the other members of the group will express sympathy by either agreeing with or not opposing the leader. After a majority are emotionally blackmailed into changing the congregation's views, we will be gathered together again, and the leaders will announce their 'findings' - and those findings will be that the congregation 'wants change' - and we will have been manipulated into abandoning our convictions by having people with an agenda take advantage of our compassion."
