Errr, Jefferson was a Member of the nascent Democratic Republican Party, which became today's Democrats. His scandal was the rumored intimacy he had with one of his house slaves, who also happened to be the half sister of and supposedly bore a strong resemblance to his deceased wife. The Federalists and later the Whigs dissolved and the remnants became today's Republicans, mostly on the platforms of tariff protection and anti-slavery (non extension into territories and new States, and more radically for the time abolition).

Sexual indiscretions cross party lines, but Democrats get away with more because of the press giving them cover, and when you're admitted perverts it's hard to be accused of hypocrisy. When the town vicar gets caught with his crosier in the wrong spot it gets more attention than when the town drunk is caught in a compromised position.

I understand, but the operating tactic here is any connection that implies or that which can be connected with “Republican” (then or later) - it is the left’s game.

You are mistaken about the equity between Democrat and Republican sexual hijinks and the ensuing treatment by media et al with respect to offending politicians. Clearly. I won’t even argue that point with you - it would be a waste of time, frankly.

Years ago, on C-SPAN’s “Booknotes,” the superb historian Stephen Ambrose, who wrote “Band of Brothers” and “Undaunted Courage” about Lewis and Clark, was asked about Thomas Jefferson and he said that with his research he was able to determine that it was Jefferson’s brother who had the sexual relationship with Sally and not Thomas. He added that it was a political rumor spread at the time by one of his opponents. I can’t remember if he said DNA tests were done or not but he said that Jefferson believed that history would one day prove that he was faithful to his wife and did not have the liaison. According to Ambrose, Jefferson was actually too much of a gentleman to point out that it was his brother who had done it and not him.

Yes, hypocrisy will hit you in the a$$ every time. Jefferson’s wife and Jefferson’s mistress, Sally Hemmings were both the daughters of a wealthy slaveholding landowner. Jefferson loved is wife very much and was devastated when she died. She also made him promise to never marry again. What would you have done living his life and time?
