Norway Starts School for Vikings
The Local ^

A Norwegian further education college is starting a programme for want-to-be Vikings where students will learn essential Viking crafts, such as sword forging, jewellery making, and roof thatching.

During the course at Seljord Folkehøgskule 150km west of Oslo, students -- many inspired by TV series such as ‘Game of Thrones’ -- will celebrate even celebrate the Norse rituals of the year, going so far as to make animal sacrifices during the winter feast.

“We see a large number of applicants who have applied for different reasons," the school's principal, Arve Husby, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. "Some have become interested through TV series and others want to learn handicraft. We give a high quality education, and if TV series get people interested, we are happy,”

Public interest in all things Viking has increased in recent years due to TV dramas such as ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Vikings’.

The school's leading Viking teacher is Jeppe Nordmann Garly, a Dane who describes himself as a "recreational Viking”, having spent much of his life trying to get as close as possible to the Viking experience.

"You could say that I am the first Viking teacher,” said Normann Garly, who professes to enjoying Viking-themed TV dramas. "Personally I prefer Game of Thrones. Vikings has too many factual errors.

Students at the school will also have the opportunity to row Viking ships, learn ceramics and woodworks.

People in England should be warned: the students from Norway’s Viking school are planning a trip to York, or 'Jorvik', as the Vikings called it.

Yeah. no doubt. I don’t imagine the various Viking tribes got along with each other. Or did they?

Body builders eat protein shakes and all kinds of ridiculous supplements and weight train, let muscles rest, then resume weight training.

Point me towards lumberjacks that eat primarily a fish based diet and have significantly increased muscle mass. I call bovine feces.

Working everyday fishing and farming(and raiding in the Summer) from sun up to sun down while eating a fish based diet does not lead to significantly increasing muscle mass.

Well head up to north eastern Canada. You’ll be deluged in something that isn’t bovine feces. Head to the Pacific NW and you’ll find more. They eat fish and meat just like all cultures always have. Heavy on the fish being both are costal.

Big. Big boys.

And there are plenty of athletes not indebted to GNC for their diet. I don’t know how this is news to you. Lots of them simply eat specific diets and skip the science.

I used to travel extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Some eat fish. Salmon is popular. But I have never ever seen an American or Canadian lumberjack eat a PRIMARILY fish based diet like the Medieval Vikings. Like most Canadians and Americans that chose not to have some weird diet they have a very broad based modern diet.

Body builders, that actually compete or look they can compete, used protein shakes and supplements. I don’t know how this can be news to you.

Most do sure. Never said they didn’t. Flex magazine used to to occasional articles featuring VEGETERIAN body builders for God sakes.

I grew up in a family of lumberjacks near the Canadian border. I knew a couple personally that weren’t red meat guys. They ate the crap out of fish as they were avid fisheman. Not small men.

My high school english teacher was regionally famous for his ‘Pike burgers” and he had a gut on him. Samoans are famous for the size of some of their man and women and they aren’t exactly in cattle country.
