Good thinking. I don’t blame you - I’d probably hibernate on top of an air conditioning vent. LOL
And yet, I read somewhere that you should let hens into the garden to take care of the insects and weeds. LOL
Our neighborhood is too populated with dogs and humans to let them wander. We would have to get one of those portable pens/yards on wheels and move it around the yard, if we were to keep chickens.
I advise cheating, which is what I did. Packed them husk and all into vacuum sealed freezer bags and stuck them into every available space in the freezer.
Not enough bags or freezer space for that. We’ve got enough of both to put up about 60 more quarts. Which is about what we have done so far.
Darn, I don’t know! I have no experience growing either. I have just seen them in pictures. Check back though, someone is sure to know the answer.
If you don’t get one, remind me next Friday, and I’ll pose the question in my update.
We just had 120 ears. Also had a bunch of chicken bought on sale, so I canned the chicken to make room for the corn. LOL
Marcella, thank you for sending the latest news about johnny. He’s still on our prayer list and know that he is a “fighter”. My heart breaks thinking he is uncomfortable in different areas of his being. It’s nice to know that he is doing art work, that keeps things in “place” as the drawing takes shape.
When you see him, plant a kiss on his cheek for me. I just wish we’d met in Ketchikan some years ago.

the early and prolonged heat here in California has messed up the crop development. cause a lot of fungus-related diseases. am also puzzled by the limited vine plant production (squashes, etc) tons of blossoms, but few fruits.
speaking of fruits, looks like the pomagrante is taking a break due to drought - very few blossoms and fruit this year.
OTOH, the aquaponics is doing well. tomatoes going good, egg plant suffering from lots of blossoms but no fruits syndrome. Picked first beans off bush bean plants though. Looking to do a major expansion of the aquaculture system next year.
THANKS for the update and prayers continue every day for our brother Freeper. Glad to hear about his weight, it’s going up, and his new picture looks good, he has good color. I work to being a glass-half-full person and good to hear progress is being made.
Oh no! You have my sympathies. I even shivered just thinking about it. I am more than a little scaredy cat when it comes to bees.
Haven’t had that many stings, but I was just a child, and I thought they were extremely painful, so am very careful to try to avoid places and things where the bees and wasps might be.
IIRC, the yellow jacket sting was the worst.
I am surprised. Drought and heat doesn’t sound like a great environment for fungus, but then I’ve never understood soil borne issues that well.
Good to hear that the hydroponics are doing well. My lemon tree is getting ready to bloom again, and I already have 8 green lemons, so I’ll be pinching off any tiny fruits till the big ones mature.
It often gets 20 fruits growing and then drops most of them - it’s a very small tree, so there’s no way it could support them all.
Three weeks of no rain and high heat here, and the deer and coons have even stripped the green persimmons off the tree. The critters must be all puckered up.
well, i don’t know what disease is it but i have things pretty much under control now.
my peach, plum, apricots and nectarines are all through. the early heat caused everything to ripen at the same time, and my nectarines got sun burned. looked again, only one pomegranate on the bush. sigh.

Had the same problem with my squash a few years ago. Turns out it was because I had planted squash and cantaloupes next to each other. The bees cross-pollinated them, and both ended up sterile. At that time I had never heard of “companion planting” — the concept (based on genetics) that certain plants thrive when planted next to each other, while other combinations won’t.
I learned this from, IMO, the best gardening book ever, called The Vegetable Gardener’s Bible by Edward C. Smith.(I don’t know him, and am not receiving kickbacks :-) ). He calls his basic method the “WORD method.” It’s labor intensive in the preparatory stage, but produces a bumper crop easily afterward, without weeding.
I spent a few frustrating years of trial and error, and searching thru various source materials, trying to figure out why so much effort was producing so little return.
This book details soil ph, companion planting, organic methods of pest and disease control. It’s so well organized, whatever you’re planting or whatever problem you’re experiencing, you can just flip to it.
No Doubt! Green persimmons-that’s a surprise. Maybe they don’t have the same pucker receptors we humans do. LOL
I hate when everything ripens at once. Our corn and green beans coincided with my daughter’s peaches, so I didn’t get a chance to get peaches this year.
Dr. recommended Zyrtec antihistamine, ice on the sting area, Advil for the pain and prescription Triamcinolone cream on the general area.
All worked well. Second day and I’m fine.
