I may be missing something, but if one animal is taxonomically named Canis anthus and the other is named Canis aureus, then they must have already been considered distinct species; maybe just not as genetically close as previously thought.

Yeah, this article is clear as mud. Looking up other sources, apparently Eurasian and African jackels were all categorized as Canis aureus before this genetic study. Now there are two species where there was once one.
