You don't have to wait for your win 10 "reservation", you can upgrade whenever you want by running this:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Choose "upgrade this computer". This requires the latest version of 8.1 (or 7). You won't need to input a key. The download is about 5 gigabytes. This will keep all your programs installed and keep all your personal files. (you can do a fresh install after the upgrade if you want)
You can choose either express or custom install, I chose custom install and unchecked about 12 scary sounding privacy settings.
Overall my experience was painless and successful. I did have to manually upgrade my video driver to get things looking great, but that's minor and expected.
I strongly recommend "classic shell" for those familiar with the old style windows start menu.

forgot to mention classic shell is free and easy to install.
Thanks, I’ll save this post for later. I’ll be glad to get rid of 8.1 but I think I’ll let 10 soak in with the general public for a while first.
Personally, I don’t know why. The layout on 10 is lovely, I think.
Why would you need “classic shell”? I don’t get it.
I should have said that most people won’t need to manually update their video driver. I have an odd-bird CPU that doesn’t have integrated graphics so maybe that’s why I needed to.
You don’t need classic shell, it’s just my biased opinion that many would prefer it. But then again maybe people would adapt and learn to like the new start menu.
In any case classic shell is a 30 second free install, and even quicker uninstall.
Does the default menu still have that idiot smartphone appearance?
The great news is that this version of Windows finally clears up earlier issues we all struggled to overcome:
1. No ongoing danger from viruses
2. No ongoing danger from malware
3. No ongoing danger form flash-eating memory bacteria
4. No need to reinstall drivers regularly
5. No more constant need to act as an unpaid MS tech employee to keep your Windows 10 system running.
There is much excitement and rejoicing today online!
Discussions are breaking out about how people will now use their Windows 10 “cold war” time surplus!
Please install and then join the discussions.
Yes.
WHY would I want to upgrade to 10 ?
What's the attraction for a guy that plays hidden object games and posts on FR and FB ?
Then I’m guessing that’s why Classic Shell is used.
Then no thanks on W10, I’m quite happy with W7 x64 set up to look like XP.
I never had any of those problems with xp, 7 or 8.
I did update video drivers occasionally.
I just use no-script with a browser and I never seem to get virus
“Does the default menu still have that idiot smartphone appearance? “
yes. Sort of a hybrid. I feel a sigh of relief with classic shell 30 seconds later.
I suppose MS supplying an *.iso file is asking too much.
Yes, the same download I linked to is a media creation tool, I put it on a USB stick. But if you have the free license from upgrading from 7 or 8, you need to run the upgrade first before doing a clean install from media.
The media creation tool can be used to upgrade your current PC to Windows 10 or to create a USB or DVD
