A fresh Start: Microsoft's Windows 10 wins plaudits from early users

Microsoft Corp's launch of its first new operating system in almost three years, designed to work across laptops, desktop and smartphones, won mostly positive reviews for its user-friendly and feature-packed interface.

The launch was seen critical for the company, particularly after the poor response to Windows 8, an ambitious redesign that confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout.

The new OS, launched on Wednesday, will be available as a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.

Wall Street Journal's Geoffrey Fowler said Windows 10 fixes most of the issues with Windows 8 and improves on Windows 7, Microsoft's most popular OS in recent years.

For one, the start button is back.

"Three months of testing Windows 10 determined that this familiar yet fresh overhaul far outweighs any problems," Fowler wrote in his review.

By offering free upgrades, Microsoft aims to put the system on as many devices as possible. The company would then make up for any lost revenue by selling services such as Office over the Internet, or cloud.

FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives said the cloud strategy could generate a new revenue stream.

"It's a step in the right direction. They went back to their core DNA around software and a cloud-centric model and ultimately Windows as a service, a subscription model," Ives told Reuters.

Microsoft, which unveiled Windows 10 in September, skipped Windows 9 altogether, to put some distance between the new system and Windows 8.

"No one can assure me that my software will work, I'm sitting it out."

Software written for Win 7 or 8 will work. I haven't had any compatibility issues with it. Even with Windows 7 drivers.

On a gut level it seems to be quicker than 7 - Open Office went on smoothly and works fine.

Me either. My next desktop will be a Max to go along with my macbook. They have their annoyances, but they’re not committed to reinventing themselves (and you) every 2-5 years.

FORCED updates. No thanks. I think Win7 is going to be the last version of Windows I own.

There are LOTS of workarounds to stop that. Blacklisting the microsoft website in your anti-malware software is one of many.

There are changes coming for web security pushed by credit card companies that will go into effect next year. Older browsers will work, unless they access a site with the new security standards, such as every ecommerce site. People will need to upgrade their web browser.

I’ve been running it all day too. Working great for me as well. I like it. It’s fast, for one thing. Much faster.

I also like the layout, and the graphics. It’s clean.

No complaints.

So what’s the REAL reason for skipping Windows 9?

Maybe they didn't skip it. Maybe they didn't like it and branched off of 8 into a different direction. 9 could be an internal release that never made it to the public.

The best thing about Windows 10: it's a lot easier to transition to if you're used to Windows 7, Vista or XP. The big problem with Windows 8 and 8.1 is that unless you do a lot of fiddling around with the OS or install a third-party program like Classic Shell, you have to deal with that Modern tiled-element interface--an interface that frustrates older Windows users to no end.

Yes, Windows 10 does incorporate a lot of the Modern tiled interface, but does it in a way that was far less obtrusive to most Windows users.

That makes sense. I vaguely recall a year-old theory that it was a marketing ploy to try to confuse OS X with Win 10.
