Word For The Day: GOBEMOUCH

Posted on 07/28/2015 8:18:06 PM PDT by Louis Foxwell

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Gobemouche

hear it pronounced

adjective

Definition:

a credulous person; especially : one who believes everything he or she hears

Examples:

"The Gobemouche abounds in clubs, coffee-houses, Capel Courts, Bellamy's, and all old women's tea-parties." – Punch, or the London Charivari, 1857

Gobemouche is evidence that certain unpleasant things, when cloaked in the veneer of French, can sound rather pleasant.

About the Word:

The word rolls off the tongue easily, and sounds quite lovely; however, if we look at the etymology it more or less translates to "fly gulper" (from the French gober, meaning "to swallow whole", and mouche, meaning "fly").

Forgive my ignorance; I see it is a topic, but don’t see a way to be pinged... Thanks!

You need to ask each of the substitute teachers to add you to their ping lists.

LOL! My first thought upon seeing this word was how to play the Scaramouche, scaramouche, will you do the fandango line into a response. Then when I saw XS post, my next thought was to reply with the Muppet version.

If Neville Chamberlain had a son, he’d probably look like that gobsmacked gobemouche, B. Hussein Obama.

I just saw that idiots protesting Walker in Philly were carrying signs that said “poop” and other 3d grade insults-
talk about declining intelligence-people can’t even come up with a real adult issue or a real profanity?

On past recent threads the link to 'hear it pronounced' never led me to what was being advertised (pronunciation of a word) but ended up trying to sell me a car on Edmunds, instead.

But like a gobemouch, I tries the link supplied for this thread, and once again, after pasting the word (pick a word, any word) into a small window, after another click of the mouse ["click of a mouse" is a technical term, I think, and I think the world is too weird, too] I ended up at a page listing Edmunds. Again. And a link allegedly to an online dictionary -- that didn't take me to an online dictionary, but instead circled back to 'howsay.com' listing for random stuff like Edmunds, and this junk;

How about this, instead? --->https://www.howtopronounce.com/french/gobemouche/

OK, OK, OK. So I’m married to a chemistry and physics teacher ...

After the Be isotope absorbed an an innocent proton, it had to move up in the neighborhood.

So its stereotyped Jewish mother immediately told it, “Go Be much heavier ... Become a Boron on the other side after all I’ve sacrificed for you!”

Happy belated birthday-I have admittedly been hit and run while working on a needed bid-I’m not the salesman my late compadre was, but I need to keep our guys in work until I’m able to shift us over to my own stuff when the situation settles-anything less would just not be right...
