Sunday on NBCs the Today, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd claimed Donald Trump was looking into how he could get on the ballot in 50 states as an independent candidate and went on to say that if he runs as a third party [candidate] it likely makes Hillary Clinton president.
Todd said, Im not going to try to predict anything Trump might do. I think theres a lot of us that thought he wouldnt get this far. We didnt think he would turn in the financial disclosure. Im through making predictions about how long Trump stays wherever. I think hes reportedly looking into how he could get on the ballot in 50 states as an independent candidate. He has the resources to do it. I could picture him deciding for he feels unwelcome with the Republicans. If he runs as a third party it likely makes Hillary Clinton president or whoever the Democratic nominee is. In his mind he would say Im the reason shes elected. And I can picture him wanting to have that honor.

“Kick him out of the debates and you are going to have a big problem on your hands”
If trump is working for the Clintons or the democrats it’s big trouble, either way. If he is, he’ll go third party, and try to time it for maximum effect. It won’t matter what the GOP does. Also, it means he’ll throw the election if he gets the R nomination.
Precisely. Trump's playing high-stakes poker, and knows his opponent (the GOPe) has very few good cards in their hand. He just raised the stakes, waiting for that little vein on their forehead to start throbbing.
Cruz meanwhile, is watching and grinning.
Hillary will not get 47% of the vote if Trump is in the race.
Yes, thank you for playing. Here are some lovely parting gifts...
I think Trump is the first person who has a chance as a third party. I think he would get a lot of votes that would go to Hillary in a two way race. So many people are angry at both parties.
If there were a Trump / Cruz ticket or vice versa as independents:
I 40% D 38% R 24%
They are trying a little too hard to convince us that a Trump third party run will make Hillary president.
You obviously have the delusion that average Americans can be classified as “Republicans” or “Democrats”, when most normal people don’t give two sh*ts about either one.
Many voters who pull the lever for the D are acting out of perceived self-interest. There are ways to pull in a lot of these voters, at least white ones.
Trump has cross-party appeal that none of the others do.
Watch Trump.
He’s negotiating.
Every step of his campaign has been a negotiation.
When he hits you, it’s to position you.
He’s testing the strength of his opponents, all sides. His opposition is weak. He knows it.
MSM, Democrats, Republicans - simpletons - weak.
Nothing is in the way between him and the nomination and presidency. Absolutely nothing.
The pirates code does not apply.
THERE IS NO REASON ON EARTH FOR TRUMP TO PARLEY with anyone.
We either win with Cruz or Trump or we will win with Cruz AND Trump.
It is true that the record for third parties in the US isn't great. The TR defection in 2012 elected Wilson. Most scholarly evidence, however, says that Perot did NOT "elect Clinton," and that he took votes equally. I think a case could be made that in his speeches and press, by attacking Bush more than Clinton, he disproportionately damaged Bush, but hard to tell.
On the other hand, essentially a 3d party won in 1860 when the newly founded Republicans, only four years old, defeated the Constitutional Union Party, the Democrats, and a third splinter. Even then, however, the anti-slave group was as divided as the pro-slave group, so it can be argued that the 3d party GOP won the election flat out.
He will if the GOPe lies and cheats in order to give JeBush the nod.
Now you have to decide if you are willing to vote with Jeb Clinton or Hillary Bush.
Walker seems to have all the right gears moving, but I think he has significant national disadvantages: 1) he isn't a celebrity, and we are definitely in the celebrity age; 2) his battles against the unions were epic, but he has yet to expand that concept and explain why we need to crush the unions nationally and what it means for good government, immigration and everything else.
Because, he felt disrespected by the GOP. It has been said and posted numerous times.
Correct. In fact, if Jeb, Rubio, Huckabee, Graham, Pataki, Kasich, or anyone not named Cruz or Trump is the nominee, I think you're correct (I'm still looking at Walker. He was awesome vs. the unions, but something isn't right in terms of his "ramping up" his positions to a national level. We'll see, but he may be one of those guys who is a good governor, but not a national figure.)
Ok, so what percent does she get? Let’s say Jeb is the nominee, how about him?
Historically, the indy doesn’t do well...think Perot as the highest number. Which purple states will he win.
Let’s say we are split as a country 30% for GOP, 30% for Dem...that leaves 40%. Conservatives won’t vote for Jeb, but they moderates won’t vote for Trump. So, again, tell me your numbers.
Trump talks but has no real firm ideas about issues...how can he win without ideas?
102%?
Are you counting Cleveland and Philly for Trump?
Remember, Trump has a 60% DISAPPROVAL among Republicans. He can’t win with a name like Bush on the ticket.
Again, what if the nominee is actually Walker or Cruz instead?
LOL...
You say this, but prove it!
He can’t even muster 40% total approval from Republicans. He is a 60% negative there. Democrats, some, might vote Trump, but to say he has crossover appeal without evidence is bunk.
If Republicans want to win elections, why do you think they are scared of Trump?
I agree. These media types even when they try do not have a clue how fed up US citizens are with the ruling class.
