Static electricity from you clothing or a piece of plastic creates a shock and a pull, both nonmagnetic. What is the difference?

Big difference.
Static electricity comes from an excess of electrons building up on an insulator, until it finds a conductor to provide a pathway for those electrons to return to a zero charge state, i.e. earth ground, with you being the ‘conductor’............................
