Two main reasons. 1: his conservative instincts are brand new, undeveloped and un reliable. 2: His ego informs him that he and he alone can be brash, audacious and blunt. And I'll add 3 as a bonus: he wants some cover for his own brashness by being "reasonable" about Geller, etc.
