They were in a military office doing a military function. As such they are now a domestic target of foreign and domestic terrorist groups. Keeping at least sidearms should be allowed even off duty especially in Uniform of the day. The idea that the military has to lock up all it’s small arms weapons is a newer idea evolving from the 1900’s. Remember when our nation was founded it was Bring Your Own Weapon.

After it came out that members of the military were specifically targeted for terror attacks, Sgt Mr. niteowl77 Jr said that any E-6 or over should be given the option of carrying a sidearm. I don't know his reasoning, but I tend to think he is correct.

A large part of it is that the brass doesn’t want to have to deal with the bad press from the inevitable negligent discharge events that would occur if service weapon carry was more common.
I don’t say this because I’m against it, quite the opposite. But that is the reality of the situation.
