The collected goods will be sent to local farmers to fertilize barley crops used to grow beer. The program will be used to create 425 kegs of beer that will be sold at the festival in 2017.

I know, the beer isn't Australian.

One of the more notable beers was likely one that was smuggled in from an American brewery and relabeled.

Red Dwarf Ping!
RIMMER: Ten o'clock changeover. Anything to report?
KRYTEN: We're still lagging behind Red Dwarf, sir -- almost twenty-four hours behind now. Other than that, it's been a moderately quiet shift, except for one small shock a couple of hours ago when we noticed an alien invasion fleet off the starboard bow. Thankfully it turned out to be one of Mr Lister's old sneezes that had congealed on the radar screen.
RIMMER: How are we fuel-wise?
KRYTEN: Unchanged for today, sir. However, the supply situation grows increasingly bleak. We've recycled the water so often, it's beginning to taste like Dutch lager.

It appears that it's a misleading headline. The urine, aka ammonia, aka nitrogen, is being used to fertilize some of the grain (barley) used to make the beer.
Heck, the most expensive tea comes from plants fertilized with panda poop.
And the civet-GI-tract-processed cherries for the most expensive coffee.

All good and well. Urine actually is a good fertilizer when used judiciously. As for the rest, I am not a big tea drinker, and I do not drink coffee. Let them have their freedom to drink what they want, as for me, I'll stick with a brew made with real water off a mountain or glacial stream.

It isn't recycled urine anymore than it is recycled cow poop. They put cow manure on barely fields as well.
Now, if they were to run urine through a filter and use the resulting water to make beer, it would be recycled urine.

Coors is made from a river that hosts white water rapids. And you KNOW what people do in their wetsuits when those rapids get up to class 4....

From what I remember from World's Fastest Indian, they should be making lemonade, not growing barley.
