Throngs of impassioned fans of the US women's soccer team turned out early for a parade through New York City's Canyon of Heroes to celebrate the squad's victory at the Women's World Cup.

The parade-goers started gathering at 3,30am on Friday along the Canyon - a stretch of Broadway where the nation's largest city has honored its legends - in anticipation of the event's 11 am start.

Friday's celebration marked the first time New York City held a parade honoring a women's sports team.

You learn a new thing everyday. Girls play lots of sports here in the 21st Century (the first Women’s World Championship in soccer was in 1991).

That’s cute, girls were playing girl sports and taking gym class in the 20th century as well.

Same here. I turned on the pre-game show.
Some blond was telling us she was gay, blah blah. Switched off.

What do they want to be remembered for, soccer or lesbian?
Why do I need to know her sexual preference to watch a game.
It’s not like the news was a revelation, one look at her confirmed it.

“When you grow up in poverty you play soccer.”

You mean poverty like Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, etc.?

A friend that plays in an adult women’s league here in north Jersey described the dynamic; if you got into a tussle with a lesbian on the other team, a lesbian on your own team might support them against you.

Gross...

but soccer is quite a popular sport worldwide so I hear.

Ironically, soccer mad nations, for the most part, don't care or watch women's soccer.

Yeah, you have USA, and to a lesser extent, England, Germany, Japan, and a couple other nations watching this, but that's it.

While this tournament was going on, most of the soccer world was tuned to the Copa America tournament in Chile.

They only showed one block. That’s why I’m asking.

How many people attended?

The City Hall Plaza where the Parade ended and the Women Players had a chance to give speeches had about 3,500 people.

It also said:

“Parade-goers — many wearing red, white and blue — started gathering at 3:30 a.m. along the Canyon of Heroes, a stretch of Broadway where the nation’s largest city has honored its legends. When the parade got underway at 11 a.m., the crowd was as much as 10 deep along the route.”

RE: They only showed one block. That’s why I’m asking.

The Canyon of Heroes Parade is Several blocks long. That’s the traditional route of many NY sports champs like the Yankees and is the same route traveled today. It usually starts at the Southern End of Broadway and will run up through the Canyon of Heroes to Chambers Street and end up at City Hall Plaza.

That’s at least 10 blocks.

I watched on liberal TV.

That’s why I asked the stunning question:

HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTENED?

I’d say based on the video of the parade, the crowd number is no different from the ones that attended the Yankees and Giants parades when those teams won.

This parade was a "triple play" (or "hat trick") in so far as the DeBlasios and the NYC lefty cohorts who promoted this thing yesterday are concerned. The cultural subtext here was exquisite for the left.

(1) It lauded soccer, a sport that is traditionally non-American, i.e., internationalism as compared to Americanism.

(2) It paid homage to women playing a traditionally men's sport, emphasizing a feminist theme that women allegedly can do just as good as men at traditionally men's activities. (Contrary to feminist dogma, women have yet to measure up to men at the highest respective levels of any sport. Sure, Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in that hyped up "Battle of the Sexes" in tennis, but King was about thirty years younger than Riggs at the time. Matched against a top-tier male tennis pro of approximately the same age, King would have had no chance.)

(3) It honored "lesbian chic," not that all the team players are lesbian, but at least the one most prominent in the parade displayed her "orientation" at the championship match for all to see.
