People ask me when I started to awaken to the end of the meritocracy in America... It was when two of my black friends (two of quite a number, believe it or not) dropped out of our competitive college after Semester 1, freshman year, in shame. It all seemed so astonishing until I realized: they were selected because they were black. Years later of course as a parent you think of the kids they replaced... And the black kids who didn't make it because they weren't "ghetto."
