Heavy metal was the No. 1-selling music genre in 1989, and parents feared the worst: that Satan worship, drug use, loads of sex, and suicide went along with it, write researchers in the journal Self and Identity. Records were burned, "Parental Advisory" warning labels were born, and some '90s research suggested that teens who were into metal had a boatload of problems. And then decades passed. How did those metalheads turn out? Pretty OK, found the team led by Humboldt State University psychologist Tasha Howe, reports Billboard. It found that while middle-aged metalheads were more likely to have engaged in risky behavior as youths, they in no way differ from both non-metal-loving peers and college students in terms of "life satisfaction and current functioning."
To get to that conclusion, researchers surveyed 377 adults, both metal-lovers (groupies, musicians, and fans), peers who preferred different music, and California college students. It turns out the metal groups' recollections of their youth were "significantly happier" than the comparison groups', and they had fewer regrets (about a third did, compared to 44.9% of students and 51.3% of non-metal peers). As for why they possibly turned out like they did, the researchers point to a "kinship in the metal community ... a way to experience heightened emotions and intense connections with like-minded people, which seemed to contribute to their eventual positive identity development." This suggests, they write, that "fringe style cultures can ... serve a protective function" for youth. The authors do note, however, that "this was a community sample of relatively high functioning individuals who volunteered to participate," which may have skewed the results. (Another study found excessive headbanging could kill.)
While Freddy Mercury was clearly the Queen, Rob Halford was definitely the butch type of gay. He could sing but was queer as a 3 dollar bill.

Musically I’m all over the place. But metal is my home. It’s the group I socially identify with more than the rest, punkers second. No matter what I’m listening to I’m a metalhead. I was offended when Pat Robertson complained about the evils of D&D right before the new Sabbath album came out, I felt it was disrespectful to Sabbath.

I dunno. Very possible for sure but when he did come out he really didn’t lose many fans. I think the fact he wasn’t wearing feather boas and prancing had a lot to do with it.
It certainly COULD have been a riot.
I was disappointing in Alphas when the established in the first ep that the doctor was a big T.Rex fan and then never had any T.Rex in the show again. Glad to see I’m not the only one letting the soundtrack influence my TV watching.

Mass was another Christian metal band that could rip.
There has only been four heavy metal bands: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motorhead. Everyone else just copies them.
I was too young for the 80s scene (I’m 33) but I’ve always been into the classics.
The Stryper post was mostly for fun...
I think Thrice was one of the best recent Christian bands.

Metal fans respect talent. Halford being gay didn’t affect his ability to call down the lightning.
He came out in the late 90’s, if I recall. If it was 1985 it would have been a big deal. I don’t recall him ever making a big deal over it that much, but I can’t say I’ve followed that closely. I did like Fight. He has a great rocknroll voice, I can’t say I am a fan of the high pitched caterwauling side of it.
Nobody I knew suspected, but yes looking back at the get-ups we were just hilariously blinded.

My kid’s 25 and prefers 80s metal to anything else. When she was in the Air Force a lot of the guys around her age were on board as well.
they liked the newer stuff as well but they were almost all Maiden fans.
I had the first album Thrice did (I think) The one with Ultra Blue on it. Loved that song.
Hey Stryper could shred! It was campy on the Christian side for sure but they had talent!
I thought it was earlier 90s but I dunno for sure.
I like the falsetto stuff for effect/within reason but yea overdone it can grate pretty quick.
