A couple found a live tank round near the railroad tracks in Union City Wednesday afternoon, loaded it into their car and took it to the police station, prompting an evacuation, police said.
A woman walked into the front counter of the police department at 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road at about 1:30 p.m. and said she had found what appeared to be a very large missile on the railroad tracks off Zwissig Way, according to police.
She and her husband had put the missile in the back seat of their car and taken it to the police station.
Officers went outside, looked at it and based on its appearance evacuated the surrounding area, including the police department, city hall and the library. They called in the Alameda County sheriffs bomb squad.
The bomb squad determined the missile was in fact a live tank round. They took it away for further examination, according to police.
Officers searched the area around the railroad tracks but found no other ordinances or explosives. Investigators have not determined how the round got there, police said.
Police ask that anyone who finds possible explosives or suspicious packages to leave them where they area and call police.
Broadly speaking, any artillery projectile or bullet is a missile. The name “missile” got attached to rockets used as artillery, even intercontinental missiles.
“...found no other ordinances...”
Well, thank God for that — Pieces of legislation randomly lying about can be quite dangerous. Editors used to know the difference between the two words even if their writers didn’t.
Good thing Buggs didn’t test it.
Sheridan had the capability with the 152 dual purpose gun but from what I remember ever reading, the shillelagh missile never worked quite right.
Wonder if there are any MGM 51s around?
Possibly, but those aren’t a likely source for our mystery munition.
I’d like to see an image of it, would aid in identifying if it is US/NATO or Soviet bloc type.
A freight train with tankers of toxic materials, propane or oil all could be devastating it hit by an IED in a populated area.
Since tank main guns started firing "sabot" rounds through smooth bore barrels? Not sure but I think the rounds do not have an on board guidance system. I believe they depend on "hyper velocity" and good initial target acquisition/shot placement.
I think missile Vs projectile is an argument based in semantics. After all slingshots are known to fire "missiles" too!

PS I think German weapons designers came up with the idea to up velocity and cut barrel wear. The Israelis and US followed along.
Checked out the video they put up on the news website.
The brass has Hebrew lettering on a pasted on label.
Could be ammo stolen by the Palis, or it could be a planted label.
Very interesting.
It is an HE round.
Tanks alot!
What is it with these people from California who put strange things on the back seat of their car.
Remember the lady who saw a large cat that looked like it had been hit by a car. It was unconscious so she picked it up - put it on the back seat of her car - and drove it to the vet. It turned out it was a bobcat. Fortunately it stayed unconscious till she got to the vet.
