Memphis Mayor Wants to Literally Dig Up Confederate General and Move Him

by Alex Griswold

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton has called for the removal of the grave of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest from a city park, along with an attached memorial.

“These relics, these messages of this despicable period of this great nation, it’s time for those to be moved,” Wharton said in a press conference Thursday.

Most historians believe that Forrest was also the first Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, although he later distanced himself from the group as they became more violent. “This is not just an ordinary monument,” Wharton said. “This is a monument to a man who was the avowed founder of the organization that has as its purpose the intimidation, the oppression of black folks.”

The local Sons of Confederate Veterans are opposed to the mayor’s proposal, naturally. Its leader calls Forrest “very well respected, and a military leader who is still studied worldwide in military academies today.”

The homos / fascists are just trying to take a page out of the ISIS playbook used in other countries to destroy their heritage and their identity. This is nothing new. It was done thousands of years ago.

OK, we’ll dig up MLK and send him to Africa. We wouldn’t want him to continue to be buried in a racist southern State.

As one who just spent a few days wandering around Memphis, I can tell you the mayor has much bigger problems to worry about.

Memphis looks like any of the northern formerly industrialized cities with a failed urban core.

The downtown is full of abandoned, dilapidated buildings. Empty storefronts that have been vacant for decades easily outnumber the few still in use. All building entrances have bars and most parking lots are encircled with razor wire.

Crime is high and professional begging seems to be the only manner of employment. Beale street just smells of urine.

As such, I will call for digging up the graves your Mom and Dad, as they offend me due to your birth, which is a spectacular mistake on their part....

The “founding fathers are illegitimate because they owned slaves” argument is very prevalent in black communities. If you enter into a discussion and use the constitution in your argument, it will be dismissed. I have even been told “you can take your constitution and wipe your @ss with it”.

A generation (or two) of our black population has been taught that there is a ‘pie’ (remember Obama talking about pie...remember the intro song to the Jeffersons talked about getting a piece of that pie). The pie just sits there...all of this nation’s wealth is there for the taking. And, as the story goes, evil white men took most of that pie when the wrote the constitution. This is where the 3/5 compromise gets brought up as proof, plus they owned slaves.

Therefore, it is very legitimate to disobey the law and steal - especially from the white guy.

Its sad...but very prevalent. When I was in the Army, I really thought it was a color blind organization, where anybody could get promoted based on merit...still believe that. And I worked with some incredible people who were black. But every once in a while, these very intelligent and hard working people would let the façade slip - and even they held this world view.

A very good explanation of why we are at here politically.

The Soviet Union did an excellent job of obliterating all the history of Czarist Russia, and the very short-lived Russian Republic that existed under Alexander Kerensky, who became an “unperson”. In fact, the Soviet Union rewrote their own history on an ongoing basis, sometimes with massive degree of photo doctoring and destruction of existing files. As a result, there are today a lot of gaps in a comprehensive compilation of timelines, and not much reliable information still exists about large segments of the daily life there.

Yes and they had the Czar and his family brutally murdered, bodies burned and bones thrown into a deep pit.

The French Revolutionists likewise disinterred the remains of the royal family and desecrated the remains.

The Left is composed of some of vilest scum imaginable.

I would seriously consider partitioning this country between sides with irreconcilable differences.

I'd highly recommend someone look into Whorton’s financial records as these NAACP bloody shirt wavers stir up trouble to deflect attention from themselves while they are robbing from the public trust. It is their MO. I would bet the house on it.

Well maybe we'll just have to dig up this mayor's grave someday. I don't even know much about Forest, but the idea that someone in the future will say he didn't like what someone did 100 years ago so his final resting place should be desecrated is so abhorrent I don't know what else to say that won't get me banned.

This is the exact problem with people who have no respect for the history of this nation. Those battles were fought, the CSA lost, leave history in the past. It is also the same mentality that reflects no respect for the rule of law, but a tribalism in which it doesn't matter what the law says so long as he gets what he wants, like any third world despotic regime.

Come to think of it, maybe we should go dig up Harvey Milk in light of the recent SCOTUS decision.

The decline of Memphis has been sad and predictable.

I grew up in the Mid-South; back in the late 70s/early 80s, Memphis was the place to go for a concert, eat at a decent restaurant, or enjoy an event like the Beale Street Music Festival.

It was also a decent place to live. I had an aunt and uncle who lived in Whitehaven, a suburb sandwiched between Graceland and the Mississippi state line. Nice, middle-class neighborhoods, decent schools and relatively low crime (in those days).

Now, after decades of one-party rule, Memphis is the urban wasteland you describe. Parts of downtown look like a war zone; I was back in the area for a conference three years ago, held at the downtown Marriott, barely a mile from Beale Street. We were told not to walk beyond the hotel parking lot at night. If we planned to go to Beale, drive your car—stay off public transportation. Beale was relatively safe, but if you ventured more than three blocks beyond the clubs and restaurants, you were taking life in your own hands.

Whitehaven, which was once a peaceful suburb, is now the hood, gang and crime-infested. Virtually anyone able fled the city long ago and now lives in eastern Shelby County, Fayette County, or DeSoto County, Mississippi. Even the large private hospitals like Methodist and Baptist tore down their urban locations and now have smaller hospitals outside the city limits. If you’re sick or injured downtown or in places like Orange Mound, you wind up at The Med, which probably handles more gunshot cases than any facility this side of Baghdad. Or Chicago.

In 1960, Memphis and Atlanta had roughly the same population. Fifty-five years later, Atlanta has left Memphis in the dust. True, Atlanta has its share of problems (including a corrupt ruling class), but the city has also attracted companies that helped spur regional growth. Memphians should thank their lucky stars that Fred Smith decided to move FedEx from Little Rock to Memphis; without it, Memphis would be in far worse shape.

Mayor Wharton is living proof that Memphis’s ruling class is just as adept as the Reverend Jackson and Al Sharpton in diverting attention to non-issues while the city literally collapses around them.

More that a decade ago, Holiday Inns—a company founded and built in Memphis—moved its corporate headquarters to Atlanta. That alone speaks volumes about the decline of Memphis.
