DES MOINES After years of flamboyant flirtations with presidential politics, Donald Trump is devising a genuine game plan to try to prove that an unfiltered showman can become a vote-getting presidential candidate.
It begins, appropriately for the star of TVs The Apprentice, with a key hire a longtime Republican operative who is causing a stir in GOP circles here as Trumps man on the ground and the architect of a strategy designed to upend the traditions of the all-important, first-in-the-nation caucuses.

As far as I know Trump has never claimed to be a conservative.
He just claims "Republican".
I'm pretty sure he is not a Social Conservative.
BTTT
So he’s not a social conservative. But he’s a fiscal conservative, right?
I don’t know that he is any kind of conservative. At least I haven’t heard him claim it.
FRiend, could I reasonably infer that Mr. Trump, GOP Presidential candidate and not a conservative, is at best a RINO and at worst a Democrat posing as a Republican?
He is far from stupid. Hard nosed character. No lightweight. Quick witted.
And Great for what looks to be a one liner, twitter driven campaign.
Almost every aspect of him is an antidote to Hillary. New and different vs, er, Hillary. Charisma vs Pants Suit. Her mechanical, strained delivery and dirty political cash machine vs quick witted responses, and I am richer than God, put away your wallet. This is about issues.
Issues that she famously refuses to discuss. Along with you know, actually answering questions.
Trump does not lose his cool, Hillary is definitively uncool, especially when she gets screechy. He is not a pol, not the corrupted business as usual that Hillary represents.
Over the last couple of days he comfortably and casually handled aggressive attitudes at CNN and Univision. An important skill.
The general mediots fear him, and will be out to get him. They tried to take him out early with name calling. "Not serious, clown car, dumb, a joke, novelty act" etc. He weathered it easily.
Don't know about his, or anyone's chances. But it looks wide open.
He will shake things up. I want that. So for now, I am in. Later folks.
“He will shake things up. I want that. So for now, I am in.”
Well said! I’m ready for anyone to come in and piss on this DC-insider party, and by God, Trump can do that, (if nothing else), in grand fashion....
I think Trump is the only man who can beat congress into passing the only hope we have, TERM LIMITS. He knows the public is on the side of term limits and he can beat congress and have the whole country beating on their critters to pass TERM LIMITS.
I am a Cruz guy but he isn’t getting any traction and wont get ANY help from the media. Trump is a master of the media and doesn’t take crap, he brings a populist message that will piss off people publicly but in the safety of the ballot box, tell me a whole lot of Dem union types wouldn’t be voting Trump and his message of AMERICAN JOBS JOBS JOBS.
I have to admit, he gets my attention. If he brings Univision to it’s knees, well I will admit that he is talks the talk and walks it.
If Trump’s for me, I’m for Trump.
He reminds me of Harry Truman, responding to someone in a crowd yelling, “Give ‘em hell Harry!”:
“I’m not giving anyone hell. I’m just telling the truth and they think it’s hell.”
So give ‘m ALL Hell, Donald. No one else is.
Ask the 20% that voted for Perot.
Your response mentions the result of Perot running, not the reasons
20% of Americans voted for him.
That disaffected conservative group is the same one that Trump is pulling for and he’s just as fake as Perot was. I don’t disagree that there’s a reason for their disaffection.
I’m concerned about unbridled illegal immigration. My state gives driver’s licenses to illegals with fewer and less reliable ids than citizens. I also worry about jobs, although I don’t agree that the problem is free trade. It’s the negative effects of government regulation and taxation. Our government has worked hard to make American labor expensive.
The story is indeed interesting.
Trump has recruited Chuck Laudner, architect of Santorum’s 2012 Iowa campaign. Laudner’s goal is to recruit voters who have not participated in past caucuses. This was somewhat the case with Santorum supporters too. They showed up long enough to cast a straw vote and then didn’t follow through so that Ron Paul supporters ended up in control of the Iowa delegation to the national convention.
Who will the new Trump supporters actually help this time?
Personally, I don't think he's any of those things.
I believe he's a populist attuned to a couple of very high-profile and important issues....Immigration and Trade.
He's certainly not a classic Democrat/Commie, and he's not your typical RINO either.
Evidence: He extols the virtues of America First. Fair Trade. Border Fence.
Honestly, he reminds me of Huey Long. A great sense for what's important to the people of the day and the ability to exploit that for votes.
Any 4 or 5 issues will do.
He is no more “fake” than 85% of the current GOP candidates running
for President.
In that respect, he is no more or no less a freak than the other 85%.
Barnum & Bailey Circus would be envious of the current GOP
Presidential Freak Show.
They do when their daddy leaves them the money.
When you start with a billion, it’s not as hard.
