Seattle Mayor Ed Murray unveiled rainbow crosswalks in the Capitol Hill neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
The Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reports the LGBTQ community has been working on the symbolic effort for years.
The rainbows were installed Monday night at six intersections on Pine and Pike streets.
The city said the project cost about $66,000. The crosswalks are expected to last three to five years, but the city said it plans to maintain them for years to come.
SDOT spokesperson Rick Sheridan said the work was paid for primarily using Street Use fees, which come from developers using the public right of way.
"SDOT typically reinvests the funds in neighborhoods that are experiencing development and where the fees are being generated," Sheridan said.

Is it a hate crime to spit on these sidewalks?
My apologies as I did not take a closer look at the photo and they are in fact using thermoplastic. The 2 guys at the top right hand of the picture are using torches to heat the material.
What the hell is going on in this once great country?
I’m not familiar with thermoplastic; does $66K sound reasonable for 5 crosswalks?
Some homophobe will probably paint over it in regular yellow or white paint, be caught, and do years in prison for a “hate crime”.
It’s almost as big as the rainbow flag flying over the Starbucks headquarters.
This town goes nutty during “celebrate deviance and mental illness” month.
You ever see people work this hard for 2% of the vote???
Tell the truth - you miss it doncha?
Those can’t meet any safety standards. Someone gets hit in one of those crosswalks, the City is getting sued.
Residents should flood the mayor with calls about any/all sidewalk, street, and bridge repairs that somehow were deemed less important than this $66K investment in political symbolism...
I’ll charge Seattle $33K to paint twice as many crosswalks.
Seattle tax payers got messed over big time and in more than one way.
“..reinvests the funds in neighborhoods that are experiencing development and where the fees are being generated...”
Heh. At first I read it a “where the feces are...”
BTW - the cost was estimated at $66k - it ended up around $100k.
Just another STUPID is as STUPID does act.
It's missing something...
Stars & Bars?
I might vomit on one.
I would love that~!!!!!
What a waste of money and time.
Yes it will. I also appreciate the city giving me a clear warning of neighborhoods to avoid. Unstated but the warning colors indicate "Warning you are entering a gay zone".
Thanks for the heads up, I really don't want to see guys swapping spit in public.
