Cop who accidentally shot a four-year-old girl instead of a charging dog is identified

The Ohio police officer who missed when he shot at a charging 40lb dog and accidentally hit a four-year-old girl in the right leg has been identified as a five-year veteran of the force. [snip]

Thomas was investigating a hit-and-run case when he heard cries for help from a nearby home in Whitehall regarding the girl's mother, who had cut herself, the Columbus Dispatch said.

When the officer tried to enter the home to provide help, the family's mixed-breed dog charged at him in the doorway, said Columbus Police Department spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis.

He fired off a shot but missed as the bullet accidentally struck the girl instead, NBC4 reported. [snip]

'[The officer] was a big guy and they have tasers and clubs and stuff,' Parlsey told 10tv. 'I don't know why you would raise a gun. I really don't agree with him just pulling his gun out and trying to shoot the dog.' [snip] 'They should have better training for situations like this,' Baker added.

Will you come to my house and save me from the meth-head holding a gun to my head demanding a fix?

Let's say the situation happens in the parking lot at Walmart and I happen by. I would in fact intervene with armed force. I would also be held to a higher standard than our trained police when doing so.

“We used to demand police officers be tough enough to take a dog bite and subdue the dog.”

Really”

Where?

I have said this many time on here. When I go to the range and there are LEO’s there I leave. They must not have ever been trained on firearm safety.

Why do we hold the police to a lower standard than we do CCL holders?

Because shut up - or do you want more attention?

Because as government employees we just can’t expect better than DMV level sensibilities out of them.

Years ago I was in the front yard, tending the flowerbeds. My Lab Toby was in the front yard, not leashed. I saw the Mail Lady coming from next door. I gave Toby a down command and she saw Toby obey. She refuse to deliver my mail. I told her to find another line of work. She wasn’t my Mailperson much after that.

I wonder how much damage this “charging dog” did since he missed....

May I note that they apparently also often see little alternative but to shoot a charging man. Cops in other countries routinely succeed in subduing people who get physical without shooting them.

Here, not so much.

I have no problem with cops shooting armed people who attack them. Routinely shooting unarmed people, I do have a problem.

Is your son home from college again?

I haven’t saved anyone from a meth head but I have taken on hillbillies with baseball bats so I think I’m a bit more knowledgeable than someone that only stayed at a Holiday Inn Express when I tell you that if you managed to call 911 the cops will not save you , they will wait outside and negotiate with the meth head until he decides what to do. If he makes them wait too long then the police will call out “SWAT” and I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes.

My dogs are 130+ lbs. and 110#,, a 40 pound dog is a beagle or springer spaniel that isn’t overweight... I , you or that cop could EASILY subdue that yapper, just grab it by the collar and fling it into a room with a door you can close, deadly force is NOT required.

Tulsa in the 60s and 70s.

Did you personally live someplace that had wusses that wouldn’t shrivel with embarrassment if they ever were too cowardly to overcome a dog physically and then the story became known?

People where I grew up had a certain amount of professional pride.

No???

So. His life was NOT in any peril after all, huh???

THROW THIS CLOWN IN PRISON.

“But mailmen do get charged by dogs, and they don’t have to shoot those dogs.”

HECK yeah they do! I was a mailman for 10 years. Got charged, bit, whatever.

But I am a HUMAN BEING, the dog is a mere ANIMAL. I learned how to deal with them - without bringing a gun to shoot them.

It wasn’t rocket science.

We didn’t used to. A cop doing this 40 yrs ago even without hitting a person would have been fired.

Feminization of the job.

Will you put your life in danger for me?

Heck no!

Note that this evil, clearly dangerous animal, despite the fact that its young mistress was shot, did *not* in fact, harm or threaten the officer.

The police won’t put their life in danger for you, either.

Remember the SWAT team cowering behind their vehicles in the Columbine parking lot, waiting for the scary noises to stop?

Sniveling, Whining, Abjectly Terrified.

I don’t expect a cop to give his life for mine, but, cops are in danger on every call.

You won’t even answer my call.
