While I have a handful or more favorites, I am curious who my fellow freepers elevate to the top of their list?
My list starts with;
Annie Lennox
Kate Bush
Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl)
And oddly enough
Cindi Lauper
There's soo many more.
Dolly Parton is right up there.
Kathleen Battle opera, a real diva with a beautiful voice
Come to think of it, wasn’t you favorite female singer named Alice something or othet? ;)
A few more generally unknowns but awesome singers to add to the mix...
Kristine - The Deepest Blue

Saw her live at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia in 1967 sitting alone at a piano. Way more personality and energy than is heard on her recordings.
Yep, this ol boy from the country agree totally!
ANN WILSON!
don’t forget Sarah McLachlan
here’s a new voice in town... catch Melissa McClelland if you can!

Laura Nyro, I believe a reknowned songwriter as well, so, that makes me think of Carol King, writer of some very good songs, “You’ve got a friend” and others... and I don’t think she was mentioned, maybe she is not a great singer.
That’s a great link and version. Thanks.
I also listened to some of those songs you, I believe, posted earlier from the ‘20s, ‘30s too perhaps, Jane Green. Very good, I am glad these singers are not being forgotten.
