Goose Bay Labrador was an important WWII airbase. Aircraft being ferried to Great Britain (bombers) refueled there on the great circle route from Montreal and Presque Isle, Maine. Next stop Iceland, then on to Prestwick (Glasgow), Scotland. The alternate refueling stop was Gander, Newfoundland (further south) but that was later in the war with longer range aircraft. The facilities, at least the barracks where the passengers were housed, are WWII vintage.

I hate United....crappiest customer service on the planet.

Made my reservations 6 weeks before coming home on an R&R from Baghdad via Dubai once. It took me 2.5 days to get to the last leg from Chicago to Jacksonville,FL. I got bumped.

When I dared to question how they could give someone else my seat after making advance reservations I was threatened with missing the next available flight as well. I spent the night in a nearby hotel and vowed to walk, swim or hitchhike before I step on board another United flight.

Screw them.

The new normal is not being hijacked so the passengers should be more grateful.

Hmmm ... United was the airline last week that had the fake-Islamophobia-woman incident last week ...

what was the emergency that required landing??

Cool! Every time I fly US <-> Europe, I hope that if there’s a problem and we get grounded, it’s in Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland, or Iceland.

That’s horrible. I really don’t fly much, but I’ll make sure to avoid this group should I ever need to travel by aeroplane again.

Back on September 11th, 2001, all European flights into the United States were diverted to Canada and other countries while we shut down our airspace.

Goose Bay took in 7 jumbo jets and Gander Airport in Newfoundland took in 38 jumbo jets, Halifax, Nova Scotia took 47!! All these planes collectively were filled with thousands of passengers in what was called Operation Yellow Ribbon...

People in the towns even took some passengers into their homes so they could have a place to sleep!

Let’s see: no Passengers Bill of Rights in Canada, as far as I know.

Maybe the airline is owned and operated by Klingons. But in that case, wouldn’t the crew think it wimpy to stay in a nice hotel? Wouldn’t they be in the barracks with the passengers?

DANG!

We flew united for our honeymoon. One of our connecting flights was late due to weather, so our honeymoon started with an unexpected 10-hour layover.

We figured the weather was not United’s fault, so we were willing to try again on a trip to Durango, Coloado. Our flight into Denver was delayed, giving us only 15 minutes to catch the flight from Denver to Durango. We made it, but our luggage did not. We didn’t really mind that part, *except* the next morning at breakfast the person delivering our luggage told us he was in the area and would be at our location in about 30 minutes so we stayed in the main city instead of driving 20 minutes to our remote cabin. 8 hours and 6 ‘yes, I’m on another delivery but I should be there soon’ calls later we were finally able to resume our vacation.

On the return trip we weren’t feeling to happy about United, but we had already paid for our tickets. My parents had an early flight, so we checked in early. When United announced our flight home had been canceled, we blew our stack and decided we would eat the loss just to get tickets from someone else and asked for our luggage back only to find out that our luggage had made it out on an earlier flight -— post 9/11 by the way.
