Penny Chenery (maiden - her father had a good stable) Tweedy (married).
I was amazed - thought I recognized her, but the short gray hair threw me. In “Secretariat” even she had blondish hair and longer, as in the old days.
Chenery had a good stable, including the other HOFer, filly Cicada.
Well, he came within 3.
No, he is no Secretariat. I’m not sure he is even an Assault. But we’ll see.
I’m pleased as it is!
Did you catch the 90-something year old lady owner of Secretariat (Penny ___?) just now with a big smile on her face singing along to New york, New York?
I saw it. That was special.
Thanks very much.
I remember her and Secretariat.
I loved watching BIG RED win!
Thank you very much for this thread.
Thank you so much!
Awesome thread!
And I guessed 5. I based that mainly on the fact that his (AP's) Preakness time was nearly 4 seconds slower than last year's California Chrome's Preakness time. And Chrome wasn't/isn't anything too special. However, AP's winning time in the Belmont is one of the fastest ever. Too bad about his first race, fading to 5th, beaten 9 lengths under jockey Martin Garcia. It was the horse's only loss. Victor Espinoza has been perfect on him ever since.
You’re welcome. I was worried if, after all that work, anyone would show up.
And the winner is, “Lusty Butterfox”
This is a problem we fans complain about.
Everyone thinks (and often, broadcasts treat) there are only these races, basically.
Racing is CONSTANT. There are basically at least 9 races carded a day for long periods of time at any given track. Not as much now, because it’s not as popular, but still long stretches of big cards. And there is no other sport that keeps running no matter what.
Only very recently, with PETA-like whiny wimpy people putting pressure (including within the fandom), have we ever had racing cancelled for e.g., snow, or “extreme” heat.
Barring that VERY recent development, horses and jockeys run no matter what. There is no cancellation, no postponement. They are the toughest out there. No wimping out because it’s “too rainy”, or “too hot”, or “too icy”.
And racing is really dirt cheap. Sometimes you pay up to $5 to get in. You don’t have to buy anything else. They’re hoping you bet, but there is no one following you, and the minimum a bet is still $2 (after a century!). Better yet, you can enter tracks midway through the day for FREE! That includes for important races. I once walked into my local track on a rainy day midway through for a Grade 1 sprint with top national-level horses for free. Only on these HUGE days (Derby, Preakness, Belmont, BREEDER’S CUP) would you not be permitted.
Sorry, don’t get me going!
I hope this means that AP is getting BETTER, rather than peaked. I tire of that (one of the reasons the TC is overrated, being so early in a developing horse’s life).
While it looked like he HAD to win today, I am not impressed by APs numbers generally as a truly great horse. Just the best of poor opponents, per se. So if he pulled off a great number today, maybe that means he will only get better. IF he stays in competition.
God, I hope so.
Awesome thread. Thanks.
Only till Jan 1 per current owners
Costas is annoyin cause he is one of those guys who went thru life an never had his ass whipped
Historic thread.
I’ll save!
What I mean is, not finding some excuse in the next month “oh, we’re so worried about his scratch on his leg - better retire him!” So typical even of good solid horses who missed the TC.
Our society is fraught with wimpiness and self-consciousness about “being mean” (animal-care is getting over-hyper-sensitive), and racing has been touched by it.
But at least races go on, no matter what. ;-)
I was so darned excited (still am) I nearly cried. I was really worried when he took that early lead...and held it for so long. I said, berdie...no way he can go the distance at that rate. But he absolutely did. And have could have (imho) ran further is asked to. He wasn't lathered and still seemed calm.
My pups and kitties are still traumatized. They don't like shouting, lol. If anyone heard loud shouting from my neck of the woods...it was me.I would have loved to have been there.
I had Frosted picked for second and Verve for third. Oh well, there was no $$$ to be made on this race. Just a great exciting race.
Thank you for the thread!
Let’s compare Secretariat’s Triple Crown win to American Pharaoh. Also we’ll look at Sham’s times. In the Kentucky Derby Big Red set world record of 1:59 to AP’s 2:03. The great Sham also ran 2:00, the third fastest time in Derby history. In the Preakness Secretariat ran 1:53 to AP’s 1:58. The great Sham also beat AP again with a time of 1:55. In the Belmont Secretariat ran 2:24, a still standing world record for a mile and half on dirt. AP ran 2:27, 3 seconds slower than Big Red, which equates to a 15 length victory for the great Secretariat if he ran in the 2015 Belmont. Sham was spent in the race trying to keep up with Big Red and finished last. BUT in the other two Triple Crown races, Sham’s time was better than American Pharaoh. Sham would have probably won the 2015 Triple Crown.
