I probably would have been one of those telling you how awful they were if I had not owned that good one.

BTW, I got a steal on it. I was walking to my car after visiting a gun show and met a guy going in. He had three guns and asked me if I wanted them. He said $90 for all three and I took them.

One was a rusty Chinese Mosin Nagant carbine. The other a rusty single barrel .20 gauge Western Auto and the third was the Winchester.

I gave the Mosin to a friend and he cleaned it up so well that I sort of wished I had kept it. The single barrel worked OK but was not ejecting empty shells. I found that some one for some reason had put a piece of cardboard under the ejector spring. I removed it and it then worked perfectly. As luck would have it my Nephew’s next door neighbor in Gainesville, FL moved and left a lot of nice things beside the street. Among them was 20 boxes of 20 gauge shells. My Nephew asked him for them then gave them to me. I now had a pretty decent single barrel .20 gauge with auto ejector.

Of course the gem of that group was the rough looking but sweet shooting and handling model 94. The action really was superb, feeding flawlessly.

POS really...

Yep. Didn't understand it. I've shot hundreds of rounds out of that Winchester Ranger without fail.

But the internet is stupid. All it takes is one person to say, "That rifle is junk!" Then ten other people say, "I read somewhere that rifle is junk!" Next thing you know, everyone hates that gun.

Same thing happened with Tapco magazines. Someone posted "crapco" and the bad rep spread like wildfire.

"British-made, all tube 100 watt Marshall Plexi, YJM-100 model."

Does it leak oil?

Sometimes I miss the pre-internet days.

I remember buying a Chinese MAC-90 Kalashnikov. Was the receiver milled or stamped? I didn't know. Was the barrel chrome-lined or not? I didn't know. Was the stock NATO or Warsaw? I didn't know. Did it have the proper length hand guard? I didn't know.

All I know is I shot the shit out of it. And then I'd clean it with WD-40 (gasp!) and shoot it some more. Repeat over and over again for several thousand rounds without a single failure to fire.

I miss this. I really do.

You might want to also consider a Remington 700 in 7.62-51 i.e. .308. It will reach out and call long distance where the 7.62-39 will not. At Academy on sale you can get it out the door for under 600 dollars with a descent scope on it.

In the right hands that is a 500 yard weapon. With a great scope on it (bring money) it is a 1000 yard weapon if shot by someone with great skill.

Gophers around here used to be able to agree with your assessment of the 10/22.

Yepper and you can get a black one. I’ve got a 10-22 with a composite stock and a collection of 25 round mags.

The best steal I ever stumbled across was a Savage over and under with 22 magnum on top and 20 gauge under.

I also own a Savage breech with interchangeable 20, 16, and 12 gauge barrel sets. The twelve with rifled slugs is a rifle, good out to 100 yds.

The SKS is a cheaper alternative to the AK and everybit as reliable. Buy several for parts.

All good firearms that won’t bust your budget.

Yep. Used to have a Norinco SKS. It was the first rifle I ever bought when I was in college. Solid, reliable shooter. Long gone now.

I remember playing around with it once. The action was locked back and I stuck my thumb into the empty magazine, pushing down the feed ramp and releasing the bolt.

Some of life's lessons are learned painfully.

You are joined by many in that lesson. I am not one but I have witnessed several at the range.

I was thinking more of the shuffling biting zombies versus those that wind sprint and bite you.
