A basic rule of the Universe is that you can’t go faster than the speed of light. So I’m going to have any aliens trying to attack us traveling at sublight speeds.
So, we’ll say they’ve got access to a giant mountain of power. They can afford to travel at 10% the speed of light, which means before they get to us, they have to slow down. At this speed, deceleration is expensive. We’d see the energy signature from their brakes long before they even reached Earth.
Let’s say they’re passing the orbit of the dwarf planet Pluto, which is 4 light-hours away. Since they’re travelling at 10% the speed of light, we’d have about 40 hours to scramble jet fighters, get those tanks out onto the streets and round up Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bruce Willis to hide behind.

I wonder if the aliens will be liberal in their treatment of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered aliens? Will be interesting to see if aliens society has any notion of sexuality and the whole LGBT universe.
We could get THERE right now. It would take a huge effort, but such a craft was proposed decades ago using propulsion powered by atomic bombs. Project Orion if I recall correctly.
Imagine a civilization like ours facing planetary destruction for some reason. Or they’re just expansionist or it’s a splinter pirate group, whatever. They send a generational mission, or one with suspended animation. Or a robotic advance guard. There’s no need for Independence Day highly advanced capabilities.
I’ll go one step further. Maybe the Jews are the original aliens. They are God’s children, after all. Plus, over the course of millenia, look what the Jews have given to humanity in the forms of technology, medicine, law?
Other religions were created to imitate what God brought to the earth. Some religions tried but had conflicts between religion and savagery (Islam). Could also explain the Crusades and the Churches of the middle ages.
It could also explain why over the course of millenia, the Jews were persecuted and exterminated. I believe that is the work of a second alien being that arrived on earth around the same time. That being.... Satan.
If they come and kill us all immediately yes but the longer we survive the harder it becomes to eliminate us and the more formidable we become.
In all seriousness, I use as a simple example of the modern US military against old babylon. And don’t think there wouldn’t be something like a transmitter and cyborg implants on every alien making earth humans, even if the aliens are “human”, utterly distinguishable in a fraction of a second - at every instant of the day.
BTW, this technology would be developed to the point that television is developed today compared to the first televisions in the late 1920’s. Far more, actually.

I am certain the aliens would have ‘cloaking devices’ that effectively hide them until they are right on top of us. They might be able to beam to the earth from Pluto.
We don’t have the capability right now, but we do have the technology. Using atomic propulsion giant, naval ship sized vessels could be sent at a greater speed than with chemical rockets. It might take a hell of a long time but we could get there. In the near future, we might be able to use done sort of suspended animation to extend life on board, of it might be a multiple generation voyage.
Finding the keys to those puzzles would advance us by a thousand years easily.
However, I don’t agree with the “thousand years” idea. The reason is that I believe there is a hard stop, and it is less than a century off. This “hard stop” is where we either stop being human or we wipe ourselves out.
But I agree that I doubt anybody would care for the reasons you state plus many more.
Well, God cares. And that is the reality beyond our speculation. :-)

This is fun and all, but the reality is simple:
If (BIG if BTW) there are interstellar space-faring aliens, and they are hostile, we’re TOAST. Game over.
Think what one division of Marines with mechanized armor and helicopter gunships could have done in the Middle Ages. OK, any truly interstellar space-faring race is going to be WAY more advanced compared to us than those Marines would be compare to knights on horseback. WAY MORE.
So let me be the first to swear allegiance to our new alien overlords! /joke

The thing is, I see it this way: Technology is advancing so fast that even someone only “slightly” more advanced than us would have a field day with us. And like you said, it would take a huge effort, meaning they are “desperate”.
If they have the technology to get here even remotely reliably, they are way ahead of us.
Remember the movie “district 9”? My interpretation of the end was that the human race was a dead species walking once that ship escaped.

Yup. But there is one theorized exception: space itself can "move" faster than the speed of light. So wrap yourself in a bubble of space and move that space faster than light. Yup, that's a warp drive.
There are actually real physicists working on this. And they have actually started to make a little tiny bit of progress.
Give 'em another 100 years, and we might get there. Sadly, though, I doubt we'll last that long. Why? Because as a species we're about to stink this place up so bad that God himself will have to step in to prevent us from exterminating ourselves. Oh yeah, and He also has made it clear what happens to this ball of dirt when the world turns on Israel, as is happening...
