Help me find an old adventure movie, probably from the 1950s. I saw it on late night TV back in 1969. All I remember is one battle scene. An expedition with two cannon are crossing a shallow river. they are then attacked by natives using arrows, spears, blow guns. The main characters, two men, unlimber the cannon, and load them in the middle of the river, with the water almost up to the muzzle. they then fire off several rounds to chase of the natives.
One native releases a poisoned blow dart which hits one of the men in the forearm. Cut to the other leading man who grabs his machete. Cut back to the other man pulling the dart out of his forearm, the arm already turning blue and black. The other man then lops off the poisoned arm.
And That is all I remember.
In the Civil War? Yes, arms, legs and lives.............
***Hollywood COMPLETELY stopped filming in Tanganyika.***
Political upheaval. Tanganyika became independent and went communist for a while. the communists then overthrew the sultan of Zanzabar and united the two countries known today as Tanzania.
They got independence, merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania... the process was not without the usual African “growing pains” requiring outside troops and lots of locals getting chopped by vying factions.
Thank you so much! That is the movie! You would not believe the number of movie experts that I have asked over the years and books I have gone through trying to find it.
I didn’t want to be accused of profiling..
Dunno the name, but believe it was part of a Brian Williams bio.
(sorry)
“What’s So Bad About Feeling Good” Dick Van Dyck I think.
On the quitting smoking and contagious disease movie thing.
Thank you very much!
Love that movie - lots of great character actors, plus Bill Mauldin - and using actual 1863 muskets. The only jolt I got was at the river crossing where the troops were holding their muskets above their heads, and outlined for a split second, was a 1903 Springfield. No wonder the North won.
***and outlined for a split second, was a 1903 Springfield. ***
If you watch the Russian version of WAR AND PEACE (1967) the battle of Borodino you will see some Russian troops in the background using bolt action Mosin-Nagant rifles.
Right you are.
My problem is memory - mine is dimming.
Some plots of old movies I’ve begun not to remember - - : ^ [
The movie he described sounds familiar, but then, at my age, everything sounds familiar.............
:-)
(That movie would fit that list, and maybe the movie "The Black Hand" too.)
‘_______at my age, everything sounds familiar.’
Or - - not familiar at all - !
(’Meee?? - I don’t remember saying that -’ )
