Huck Finn's waiter's racist action did damage to New Orleans

There are countless reasons to be outraged by last week's revelations that a waiter at Huck Finn's, a French Quarter restaurant, thought it appropriate to print the N-word on a receipt delivered to a table of African-American diners.

Debate over whether the racial invective was an "isolated incident" has raged online for a week. While I find it difficult not to question a working environment that allowed for an employee to use the company point of sale system as a forum for bathroom wall graffiti, the truth of whether the act was an aberration is immaterial to the issue of the message sent in the dining room and beyond. (Ask the folks up at Ole Miss about the effectiveness of dismissing last year's student noose "prank" as an isolated incident.)

The Huck Finn's news went viral. How could it not? The offense in question did not appear in a rap song or between the covers of an immortal 19th century novel. That’s Cyril’s wife. I wonder if this is their daughter. Hard to say, because Cyril is the militant Neville, colossal chip on his shoulder.

Hmmm, maybe the N word was Neville. Maybe she is looking to start a career of her own and wanted a little attention to get her name out there. I can’t imagine anyone working in an establishment like that would knowingly mistreat a Neville.

Murders etc. are common occurences. Racism is not, hence the news story. The more unusual something becomes the more it will be a news story
