Women the world over have to deal with “hey, baby” and worse from catcallers while walking on the sidewalk or riding the train — and most say the harassment started when they were girls.
Street harassment is so common around the globe that 84% of women say they experienced it before turning 17, a new study found.
More than half told researchers they have been fondled orgroped, according to the global online survey of more than 16,600 women, by anti-harassment group Hollaback! and Cornell University.
“This is a global problem. This really points to the fact that it is a global epidemic,” said Debjani Roy, deputy director of Hollaback!
Fei Lai, 26, says the harassing comments make her uncomfortable, but she pretends not to hear it.
“More people are able to recognize this as a problem, rather than something that just happens,” she said.
A striking 82% of transgender women across the globe reported being harassed because of their gender identity, researchers found.
Nearly three-quarters of women overall reported being followed on the street.
Street harassment is a daily tribulation for many New York City women.
“I just pretend I don’t hear it,” said Upper West Side consultant Fei Lai, 26.
“I feel like it does make me more uncomfortable,” she said, especially at night.
Queens television editor Lori McCarthy said she started wearing headphones when she goes running so that her music drowns out any unwanted comments.
“When I first moved to Astoria, I was surprised at the amount of catcalling,” she said.
Macha Griffith O’Donnell, a Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn waitress, said she keeps her head down and doesn’t stop walking if someone starts making comments about her body.
“It’s a part of life, I suppose,” said O’Donnell, who added that street harassment is different in New York than in her native Ireland.
“Men over here like to wolf whistle — they’re more confident,” she said.
More than 10% of Americans who responded said they were harassed before age 11.
“People don’t want to recognize that this starts really young,” said Roy. “The emotional impact it has as girls develop is quite significant.”
Feminists should be concerned about ISIS and Boko Haram sex slaves, not cat calls they are free to ignore.

Oddly enough, from the autobiographies I’ve read, the cat calls and “sexual harassment” REALLY begin when they PUT ON the bags! (because it signals sexual maturity). Eeeew! Frankly, I love it now that I’m middle aged and I loved it when I was younger too, to be cat called. (Harassment is a different matter, that was just creepy!)

And since when is “hey, baby” threatening? or a whistle or any of that?
I’m 51 and I still get male appreciation, and I have never considered it anything but a compliment. Not once has a man ever said anything filthy to me in that respect.

even Helen Thomas says that a few years ago she was catcalled and groped.
Oh this is ridiculous. Someone actually spent money on this research? It’s nature, and I suspect the only ones complaining are those who no one notices or those who want another woman to “catcall” them.

Good point ... Would be interesting to see a study on how many times a "catcall" actually worked (as I suppose most of those who do it hope -- desperately hope -- it will! -- Hah!)
Catcalls only work to make women uncomfortable — and that is exactly what the insecure morons who do the catcalling want.
At least, that’s how I see it.
And 16% of women were offended that they did not get a catcall.

If any of them really don’t want catcalls from the retards, they should wear more clothing. Clothing is like armor against retards to some extents.
Everyone knows that calling cats is a waste of time. They don’t listen.

I got some of those when I was eight years old.

Did they say wht percentage of women misheard something and thought it was a) a catcall, b) directed at them when it was for someone else, c) not a catcall but they wanted to lie and say they get catcalls, or d) any combo of the above?
