Anyone watching the miniseries on History Channel? I missed part 1. Watching second. Not that great but I haven't changed the channel yet.

Actually I wrote “last survivor” by accident. I meant last male-survivor, as the women were allowed to leave. All the rest of the male defenders, as you said, were executed in the show, and also in history. So Ray Liotta surviving and becoming an avenger is definitely Hollywood license.
The better half just now says she saw Ray—who she likes very much—on a talk show and was disappointed to see that he had become a big boy since his days as Henry Hill, good fella.

I personally prefer “Lone Star Nation” by H.W. Brands. He is a professor at Texas A&M yet they didn’t back the book very strongly. He documents his research thoroughly (Almost 40 pages of notes and sources) - but he lets the facts play out as they are. Unfortunately it seems the current thinking is that ALL history books must somehow reflect current political correctness, even if it takes outright lying.
I should point out as well that I recall hearing, either in class or the playground, that the subsequent war of northern aggression was fought to an inconclusive draw. Heh

He definitely lost a lot of weight for the show. He looks just fine! Can't comment on the wildly handsome part LOL.

The book Lone Star Rising is at Sams Club and very well researched.
Just keep in mind that that part of Texas on which the events took place is a coastal plane. San Jacinto is near Houston which is less than a hundred feet above sea level. That’s why so much f it is underwater because of the rain today.
Most people have no idea of what Texas is like. “Lonesome Dove” was generally faithful to the actual geography. But I still laugh when I recall a movie with Lawrence Harvey called “Walk on the Wild Side” that depicts him getting off a truck on which he had hitched a ride right by a sign that says ”Beaumont, Texas.”and he is right in the middle of a desert!
Todays Goliad is a small town, dominated by the town square housing town offices and court house, including the “Old Hanging Tree” right outside the courthouse side door.
