A grateful Virginia mother has taken to Facebook to thank a white state trooper who helped her black son with a flat tire late at night - and her post has since been shared more than 20,000 times. Dr Nada Owusu wrote that her son Joseph, a Virginia Tech student, was on his way home from school last Thursday when his back tire blew out 'in the middle of nowhere'. She said her 20-year-old son was then approached by Virginia State Trooper Matt Okes, who she noted didn't ask Joseph if the Mercedes was stolen but instead 'got on his knees to replace his tire.' When he realized the tire was stuck, Okes stayed with Joseph for hours until both the student's parents and AAA arrived to help, Owusu wrote. And as they waited Okes made sure to shine the lights of his cruiser on Joseph's car to help warn oncoming trucks and other vehicles, according to WTVR. Owusu, a pediatrician who emigrated from Ghana and now works in Danville, Virginia, called Okes 'our hero.' She said the trooper even drove behind the family after they returned to the road. The post has since gone viral, even catching the attention of television host Montel Williams, who told Owusu he was grateful she had shared Okes act of heroic kindness with the world. 'Too often we look at very specific instances where police miss the mark,' he wrote.

This shouldn't be an extraordinary story. This type thing happens everyday in all walks of life on both ends of race.
I strongly suspect the officer called in the tags before approaching the driver, then asked him for ID, as he should for any stop, for a driver of any race.
He therefore knew the car was registered to the driver and had no reason to ask him if it was stolen.
A very large percentage of cops who are murdered in the line of duty die in routine traffic stops.
Nice article!! Of course, it shouldn’t be extraordinary, because blacks can drive expensive cars.
Pants up, or down? Just curious
Excellent reporting of positive news. Hello media?
who she noted didn’t ask Joseph if the Mercedes was stolen but instead ‘got on his knees to replace his tire.”
...she just had to throw that in.
This path to prosperity is open to so many young blacks in America. Untapped potential, due to lack of families and lack of role models. What they need to do is hit the books, not the tackling dummies. It is very frustrating to watch.
Right there is probably the difference in the way it played out. How did this kiddo present? How did he behave, respond, how was he dressed.
Good question.
But some rich black folks, like rappers or ball players, choose to dress like urban gangsters. Or is it the other way around?
No doubt, pants up, good attitude. It always helps to be polite and well groomed.
A colleg classmate of mine in Chicago back in the ‘80s told me about the time when her dad, who was a cop, questioned a man who was trying to get into a Porsche with a coat hanger. After a few questions, and a showing of ID, her dad apoligized to Mr. Walter Payton, who locked his keys in the car.
It doesn’t fit the media narrative of a racist society of white males. So don’t expect to see this story in your local news rag or on television.
“it shouldnt be extraordinary”
It’s not, and to me this story may be kind of damaging to the police in a way, it sorta says, “hey we found one cop that’s NOT racist and helps blacks”..........like it’s a rarity or something. We all know this kind of thing happens all the time and we also know our media will not report it because it doesn’t fit their little meme.
Yes, a person’s general demeanor and the way they carry themselves is evident from the start. After experience, I would think cops start to pick up on this.
Judging from the picture, the kid looks like a clean-cut respectable man. That first impression speaks loudly.
This was a dig against the officer. No cop asks if it is stolen normally since he has already run the plates.
That's the point.
It isn't about color, it is about culture.
Also curious if there isn’t a measurable level of over sensitivity to white-cop/black-kid due to all the over-the-top media lately.
