Our school uniforms were wool (and itchy!) With accordion pleats. About a hundred of them. My Mom used to drip-dry the jumper or skirt, using clip clothes pins at the bottom of each pleat, so it would dry right, lol. We also had the cotton blouses with Peter Pan collars. Once in awhile, Mama would get carried away with the bluing, and my blouses were a pretty ice blue-and starched like mad! : )

My dad (born 1917) said when he was a kid he would get out in the morning first thing on milk day and drink the cream that had risen to the top. His mom would get so mad!

My mom (1918) talked about the “Cheney Man” - the guy that had a horse drawn cart and would collect rags and other junk. She lived in the city, and I think he was the only one that still used a horse. She would always run down to pet the horse.

She saved up all the scraps of tin foil. When she had a big ball - the size of her head, she brought it out to the junk man.

“Hmm - I'll give you two cents for it.”
“Two cents! I'd rather just keep it!”

She was so disappointed.

When she passed away, and cleaning out her million-dollar home, there were eight sheets of used tin foil stored in her oven. Washed and flattened out the best she could.

“Midnight Special”: Stayed up with toothpicks holding my eyelids open one night to catch Gordon Lightfoot on that one. Now he’s on You Tube anytime... Maybe there are some advantages to getting old, lol!

Brother was probably 18 months to 2years by that time so his bottles did not need to be sterilized. I can still remember the bottles hitting the floor. Funny memory, I love FR because so many subjects come up, old and new.

What a story about your dear mom. Glad you had such a devoted dad!!!

And yes, I have some of those linen dresser scarves with crocheted edges, too. I love to decorate with them at Christimas time.

And now for you nice ladies and gentlemen out there
Who don’t understand the I-talian language
I’d like to do two choruses in British

Lazy Mary you better get up”
She answered back, “I am not able”
“Lazy Mary you better get up
We need the sheets for the table”
“Lazy Mary you smoke in bed
There’s only one man you should marry
My advice to you would be
Is to pay attention to me”
“You better marry a fireman he’ll come and go,
Go and come sempr’s la pompa a mano tiene

Se c’in gappa la fantasia ti pomperia figgliuzza mia
La lario la pisci fritt’e baccala
Oeh cumpa, na pompina ci ha ggia catta

Joyous laugh! Louis Prima and Kelly Smith did a great version of that one... Whenever they show the wedding scene in “The Godfather” and Mama and that little old man sing, I can’t help it, I sing and clap to the music, and laugh! Best part of the whole movie!

BTW the wringer washer was a huge modern addition to our house

Remember those old steam ironing things that had a large drum roller that one sat in front of and pushed their clothes or sheets thru?

I still have one that belonged to my grandmother.........

I have to agree. The old guy singing it, the hand gestures—priceless! And the song has innuendo, but not so bad that the little kids would understand. I can read Italian but those lyrics are written in Neapolitan dialect, which I can't make out, except for the part where he switches from English to Neapolitan to say the racy part:

“You better marry a fireman he’ll come and go,
Go and come sempr’s la pompa a mano tiene...
"Go and come, he's always got the hose in his hand" — LOL!

Lol, when we we kids, we didn't get the double-entendres, or they'd sing them in Italian- way back in the days kids were invited to weddings! I remember the butcher boy:

Oh, Ma-ma, oh get that man for me!
Oh, Ma-ma, how happy I would be;
Tra, la, la, and cheery-beery be
If I ever marry it's the butcher boy for me!

I wonder what he had in his hand?! Lol...

Remember, Eh, Cumpari? That one was really hard to follow! 🎶🎹🎷🎸🎺🎻🎤 bee dee-dee-dee, dee-dee-dee!😀
