Jerusalem
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon Englands mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On Englands pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariots of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In Englands green and pleasant land.
An awesome song that was considered as England’s (not Great Britain’s) unofficial national anthem. It made sense in the 1800s, but not today. It also made for a very funny Month Python skit!
William Blake is one of my favorites and I really like Jerusalem.
I never really understood it but your comments basically explained where he got the idea. Really who knows? It could have happened.
