Actor James Franco has written a lengthy endorsement of his former employer, McDonald's.
The brand has been struggling with declining US sales and announced an extensive turnaround plan this week.
Franco writes in a Washington Post op-ed that in the late '90s he was a struggling actor living in Los Angeles. He was fired from a coffee shop and golf course and couldn't find acting jobs.
He became desperate after his parents cut him off financially.
"Someone asked me if I was too good to work at McDonalds," Franco writes. "Because I was following my acting dream despite all the pressure not to, I was definitely not too good to work at McDonalds."
Franco says he began working in the drive-thru and practicing foreign accents on customers.
Despite that fact that he had been a vegetarian before he started working at McDonald's, he began eating the cheeseburgers that were headed for the trash after sitting for more than seven minutes.
"I hate to whistleblow, but everyone ate straight from the fry hopper. Youd walk by and snag a fry and pop it in your mouth. So easy," he writes. "I also put tons of salt on the fries because thats how I like them."
Franco was eventually promoted to working behind the counter.
He was able to leave his job at McDonald's after booking a Super Bowl commercial with Pizza Hut. Since then, he's become one of the most successful actors in the industry, starring in The Interview, 127 Hours, and Spiderman.
But Franco says he still feels affection for the fast food chain.

I have worked with James and he was thoughtful and kind to everyone involved in the production, especially us nobodies. He went out of his way to spend time with us rather than hobnob with the more famous and wealthy participants. This article on MacDonalds is in keeping with his loyalty to those who have been good to him. Don’t know his politics, don’t know about his personal life, but I do he does not put on airs or think he is better than anyone else.
That's pretty funny...
Good payback from Franco. You have to give him “props” for this. Lots of people in his position wouldn’t admit to ever having worked at a MacDonalds.
Yep, about as successful as hundreds of other actors but a far cry from "one of the most successful actors in the industry"
generally, too many people put down McDonalds when in reality, its a "go to" place for many of us when we're running late to get home,or traveling....you always know what you're going to get, its pretty quick, and not too expensive...
and as for people that work there, it teaches people manners, organization,teamwork,etc....nothing in the world wrong with it at all...
and some people don't need to make a zillion dollars to live...some just need "some" money for the household...others are just starting out....no shame at all....infact, I'd say its commendable...
I blame Dionne Warwick for that.
V good bro! I am slightly impressed! :} I always liked him from his evil morphing liquid metal T1000 but his acting career went nowhere. A shame
Whoever came up with that liquid metal for T2 was a flat out fn genius
Good to hear, and thanks for sharing your insight on the guy! How people handle fame speaks very much to their character. Sounds like Franco is pretty nicely grounded in the right things.
I missed that!! Thanks
Not at all. When you look at all the commercials, all the TV shows on hundreds of cable channels, the countless movies released each year, most of which go straight to rental, there's easily tens of thousands of people who can honestly call themselves "actors" having earned at least one paycheck in the business. Of all these people, maybe a hundred are what we would call household names. The Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning James Franco is one of these.
Yet I had never heard of him until I read this article.
I think that depends on the McDonald’s. Many of them are staffed by the same cohort.
It’s. Called 365Black.
It’s their marketing campaign.
White people no longer are sought out as customers.
“He was able to leave his job at McDonald’s after booking a Super Bowl commercial with Pizza Hut. Since then, he’s become one of the most successful actors in the industry, starring in The Interview, 127 Hours, and Spiderman.”
I don’t dislike Franco by any means but saying that he became one of the most successful actors is stretching a bit.
LOLOLOL!!!!
That's just too funny. If you haven't heard of him, he must not be a household name ... {^)!!!
“He became desperate after his parents cut him off financially.”
But he thanks McDonald?
I certainly have a household. I guess household name means you saw him in a movie before.
Relatively speaking, Franco is most certainly one of the most successful actors in Hollywood.
Ever heard of Elisha Cook?
Is his a household name?
Eating pie.
How many?
