MILLSTADT, Mo. -- At first glance, it seems absurd to suggest that a small company on the outskirts of St. Louis could be a serious player in the race to provide the U.S. Army with its next handgun.
This is, after all, a major event in the realm of military weapons -- having happened only twice in the past 100 or so years. And it's expected to draw the attention of the industry's most powerful names, including Smith & Wesson, Beretta, Ruger and Glock.
And then there's tiny Detonics, a five-person operation in Millstadt that fashions itself more tech company than gunmaker.

Unless . . . .if the tiny Detonics company (five total personel) has a good and appealing product and the military would license bigger companies to produce it.
SIG P220 would be just fine with me.
Are they offering some new design here? Lots of outfits make almost compact 1911s these days.
They must be well connected.
Detonics Combat Masterpiece. Used to own one.
The FN FNX, S&W MP series and the SIG 220 series are serious contenders and so is Beretta.
Active Duty ping.
Here’s a suggestion - 1911 .45
Never equaled, never exceeded.
Except by the Glock pistol you mean. :)
I have an idea.Lets go back to the colt 45.
Glocks are a modern concoction.
I, personally, like them, but there’s nothing on Planet Earth as good as a 1911 .45.
The company's guns were popular, even snagging a costarring role on the ankle of Sonny Crockett (actor Don Johnson) in the Miami based TV crime series.
How many ounces do they weigh when fully loaded with bacon fat? And what’s their range, and is there a super soaker version.
Hk45T in Version 3 configuration.
The compact version Hk45ct is already serving with the Navy SpecWar groups under the designation Mark 24 Mod 0. At least one went on the Neptune Spear operation to bag Usama Bin Laden.
Of course, the U.S. Army hates Navy ideas and will cheap out and go with the Smith & Wesson M&P gun, or something. I sure hope they don’t choose the FN FNX 45 Tactical.
Whatever they select, how the gun fits the hands of a 5’1” military policewoman will ultimately be the prime consideration even if she’s just going to get pregnant and leave the Army after 2 1/2 years active duty on a disability.
(And I'm still laughing - truth is way funnier than fiction)
Nonsense. The 1911 is a beautiful sailboat in an ocean full of powerboats.
Mine was absolutely spectacular. Unfortunately, Arthur convinced me my beloved 45 acp is too much lovin' for me, and sadly, we had to part.
Got my S&W 629 sitting beside me right now as a matter of fact. beautiful.
There's a saying, you show your buddy your 1911, you show your enemy your Glock. same is true for smith and Wesson revolvers I guess. IMHO.
Absolutely.
