It’s one of those things that separates smart GMs from dumb. Smart GMs don’t trade up in the draft (because no player is worth more than 1 draft pick), trade down a lot (because more picks is more chances to get good players), and steer way clear of Heisman winners. It’s always amazing to me how many teams just can’t understand these simple rules. Any perusal of the draft methods of perennial contenders shows these rules. And yet next weekend we’ll see at least a dozen teams violate rule 1, some in a desperate attempt to violate rule 3. Meanwhile Belichick will be using rule 2 to stack up at least 10 draft picks next year.
