Switzerland is the world's happiest nation thanks to healthy GDP figures, strong social bonds and an increasing life expectancy, a new study of global wellbeing has revealed.
The list is dominated by European nations, particularly those in Scandinavia, and measures a country's population by factors contributing to its citizens' contentment, rather than wealth.
Britons are happier now than they were two years ago, the study found, but still ranks in at a relatively lowly 21st place. And despite often mocking its northern neighbour as an inferior nation, the United States is a full 10 places below Canada, ranking at 10th and fifth respectively.

Look at who our respective leaders are, that will explain a lot.
I drove my car through Switzerland in 1969 while on leave from the Army, with a bunch of rowdy buddies, who were all high the entire time on various substances.
The Swiss were the friendliest, most generous, most intelligent people I ever met in Europe. Complete strangers would put us up overnight, free of charge, at the drop of a hat.
One morning we woke up in a Gasthaus on a mountain top with a 2000-foot sheer drop making up one edge of the patio outside, where the owners cooked us one heck of a breakfast and wouldn’t accept any payment at all from us in return (we secretly left a $100 bill under a pillow, which was a lot for us in those days). You couldn’t have bought that view for a $1,000 a night at any fancy hotel in Europe. The country is beautiful, no doubt about that. In many ways.
Well, that math makes me unhappy. Ten places between 10th and 5th? Ouch.
I don’t recall seeing Lichtenstien on the list. Maybe it’s too small to be taken into consideration. Iron Mountain getting snow in late April? Who ever heard of that? LOL! Not to worry, the NWS is currently saying the Tahoe basin south into Mono county may (big may) get 6-12 of snow tomorrow.
LOL
Switzerland, a large block of granite with snow on the top.
And yet they manage very well economically and in most other ways.
It’s because they are Swiss...maybe no one else could pull it off.
I like the Swiss; they have too many holes in their cheese though. (thanks Don Rickles)
“move to Switzerland “
Idiot. As another poster said, Switzerland is a great place because they protect their borders, languages and culture.
The babes are Swedes. You know, Swede,Swiss sounds the same, eh?
From "One, Two, Three"
Peripetchikoff: We have emergency meeting with Swiss Trade Delegation. They send us twenty car-loads of cheese. Totally unacceptable... full of holes.
There’s snow. I hate snow. I could never be happy in snow.
And we only have two borders. They’re landlocked and so have more borders.
Good point! ;)
The good news is, we're actually twice as happy as the writer believes.
On my list of places to go for vacation.
A bit too expensive to retire for me but who can say where the future leads me.
You. I like you.
I’m part Swiss and go there every now and then...
The Swiss are lovely to you if they are paid to be nice to tourists...
They are snobbish bores otherwise....
And they corner the market on euthanasia...
Yup, every male over, I think, megalomaniac age is required to have a fire arm and be ready to serve at the drop of a hat...don’t mess with the Swiss.
But they caved to Obozo on ratting out tax dodgers...
That’s “legal age”, not “megalomaniac”...
Damn auto correct...
You are a very funny FReeper...I really laugh at your posts!!
