This was all “settled science,” right?
It’s not the accuracy of the predictions that matter. It is the seriousness of the claims.
I was in Junior High School in 1970 and remember the first Earth Day. It was “Ecology” with it’s own symbol. It was mostly about litter and air pollution.
Bump
Today is Earth Day 1990...What will happen 20 years in the future if we don't take strong measures now ...?
By 2010, the Earth's temperature will increase five to seven degrees, he said. Even that seemingly small rise will cause a chain reaction of catastrophic proportions that will begin with the melting of the polar icecaps, said Steger, who also led the international trans-Antarctica expedition that monitored damage caused by ozone depletion. Ocean waters will rise from melting ice, endangering coastal regions.... Much of the West Coast - ...- and the Eastern seaboard will be flooded, and parts of the Soviet Union, Denmark and the Amazon deltas will be underwater.
Miami Beach will not be the vacation spot of choice... As temperatures soar in Florida, vacationers and retirees may flock to New York for the year-round sunshine and balmy breezes. And snow? Forget it. That white, frosty blanket that has traditionally covered large parts of the Midwest and East in the winter will be something you only see in picture books - or maybe in the mountains.
The Midwest, the nation's farm belt will become a dust bowl, Steger said. "It'll be like a parched desert," Steger said. "This will not only affect our food but the food supply of other countries...People will starve. It will be a disaster."
Most of the mighty lakes, such as Lake Michigan, and the Mississippi and other rivers will turn into giant mud flats. The Earth's rising temperature would also turn forests into grasslands. And 50 to 90 percent of America's salt marshes, swamps and bayous will be destroyed because of the flooding, Steger said.
Soto compares society in 2010 to the movie "Blade Runner. where acid rain is a way of life,...and the world is dark and gray.
-- from the thread WARNING: THE EARTH'S DAYS MAY BE NUMBERED
The only way I survived the 80s was by eating remaindered copies of Ehrlich's The Population Bomb.
lol. there is a list of Hundreds of wrong predictions in the last 15 years alone. Repubs should carry this printout in their hip pockets and SLAM it home to the public. Along with full term abortion that the public overwhelmingly hates
And yet Paul Ehrlich continues to command hefty speaking fees on college campi all across the fruited plain.
The guy has never been right about ANYTHING!
And all the language was the same as global warming. All the same alarm, the same hysteria. Florida will be underwater. An instant ice age like in that “Day After” movie,,
Thanks for posting, I just sent it to a liberal friend LOL
In 2015, the really dirty, brown smog that was common during the summer are increasingly rare (the Los Angeles area rarely has high-level smog alerts nowadays) and untreated dumping of sewage and industrial chemicals into large rivers and lakes are just about unknown (scenes like the river catching on fire in Cleveland, OH can't happen anymore, thanks to strict requirements on treatment of industrial wastewater). Unfortunately, this is not the case in China and India, and the result is that both countries could face within the next 15-20 years mind-boggling costs of health care to take care of people sickened by pollution-related diseases that could effectively empty the liquid reserves of both countries.
I’ll bet they drummed up lots of research grant money! Just like today!
I’d forgotten that nitrogen was the boogy man for awhile.

Some of the Prophets of doom made an okay living. Many out lived their wacko predictions.
A lot of the lib/progs were hoping, praying?, that it would all happen. That the Mother Earth would spit out mankind (especially Republicans and or Christians) like an invading bacteria. Leaving only a small number of enlighten guardians of the Earth.
They would sing songs and write poems the Mother Earth and this would make her very happy and healthy? :)
BUt you have all ruined it with your selfish need to thrive.
