In the wake of the tragic murders of two Michigan children whose mother tortured them before stuffing them into the familys freezer, lawmakers are calling for more stringent regulation of homeschooling in the state.
The proposed legislation from state Rep. Stephanie Chang, a Detroit Democrat, would require homeschooled children to be inspected twice per year by a licensed social worker or law enforcement officer. The bill would also require homeschooling parents to register their children like dogs or sex offenders with the superintendent of the school district in which they reside. Michigan is one of eleven states that do not require homeschooling parents to report to state or local authorities.

My response to Michigan would get me banned.
State agencies trying to cover their butts for dropping the ball on this known child abusing mother.
My dog’s registration is less if he is neutered.
Check their teeth? /S
All your kid are belong to government
“My response to Michigan would get me banned.”
Bears repeating as it’s the perfect response.
My dogs registration is less if he is neutered.
I think we should do thorough background checks on lawmakers.
Neutering them is a good idea.
That makes two of us.
If having your children at home is cause for a social worker visit, then every home with should be visited.
Is that really the form of society we want in the Land of the Free?
This is very disgusting.
Should the parents of these children comply with this law, then they are just as stupid as the politician that wrote this law. When are the people in Michigan and every other states start fighting back from these politicians? If these parents comply with this law, then they are just like a bunch of lemmings, and should jump off a cliff whenever these politicians tell them to.
How often does this sort of thing happen in Michigan outside of Detroit? If it doesn't happen, and it isn't likely to happen in the future, why harass the other 93% of households of the state?
It appears you are not in favor of registering the kids with their local school district for any reason. I believe the main purpose is mainly to inform the city of the children’s existence, there general state of health (vaccinations) and their achieved academic levels. What would you suggest to protect two other children from going through a similar private hell with a deranged mother who is pretending to ‘home school’, when all she’s doing is holding them captive? My assumptions could be off, but I’m looking at all the details.

They should also be required to wear body cameras.
they're dumbing down the children. Ban Teachers unions and we'll be moving ahead.
Michigan has a solid homeschooling contiingent, this ain’t going nowhere. I guess the honorable Representative from DETROIT wants all of Michigan’s chidren to elevate the children’s educational experience to that of a public schooler in her city.
Only if same policy is instituted for illegal aliens...
Our children do not have Social Security numbers and we do not claim them as deductions on our taxes because government can’t control what it doesn’t know about.
Michigan has now validated our practice.
“Is that really the form of society we want in the Land of the Free?”
We are quickly becoming the land of the fascists.
How about grotesque over-generalization of a specific crime problem into a completely unrelated area of law?
You know terrorists use the internet, right? And here you are using the internet, right? So where's your license? Have you been checked twice a year by a social worker?
Oh, is that not a fair comparision? Wrong. Multiple bills exist right now to do exactly that to users of the internet in the US. So it's not only not unfair, it's exactly what your kind of thinking leads to.
The solution is found in the Consititution. It's called freedom. You obviously find it scary, untrustworthy and mysterious.
