In the context of this article, the husband is using the word “gay” means “a man with an ongoing attraction to other men.

Is that valid in your opinion?

I think it's too ambiguous. I'd recommend the term "Same Sex Attracted" or SSA.

I have the same quarrel with two self-described "lesbian" writers, Melinda Selmys and Eve Tushnet, who write pro-chastity articles in the religious press. Selmys is married and the mother of six; Tushnet is single and celibate. But they both call themselves "lesbians," when the better term, I think, would be "same-sex attracted".
