For all we spend on education, why don't they learn manners?

The elephant on the Green Line trains is the behavior of many of the young people who ride the trains: appalling profanity, an utter disregard for the tidiness of the carriages, the blatant freeloading. To the last, it has not even been a year of operating yet and there is a passenger constituency so accustomed to not paying that a train ride might as well be another in a long list of entitlements. Our elected worthies seem disinclined to point this out. In the meantime, our governor, Mark Dayton, when he is not championing the return of the umlauts to the road signs in Lindström, is ridiculously unsatisfied with various education bills that don't propose to spend at least $695 million, or more than one third of the state's surplus. House Republicans have proposed a $156 million increase in education spending over the two-year budget for 2016-17. Senate DFLers want $361 million in new spending. Dayton scoffs. He is greedily eyeing that anticipated $2 billion surplus and wishes to pass it out to the bottomless pit of public education, there being no evidence that money spent equals academic achievement or closes the achievement gap. Well, there are those superintendents who must be kept in high clover.

Moral instruction is as important as intellectual instruction. Unfortunately, the government schools provide neither.

I know it's been discussed many times, but while Obama's "You didn't build that" has passed into legend, it was what he said immediately before that was so objectionable.

To wit: "I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart."

It was revealing - and the Left doesn't like to be revealed - but Obama is the ultra-concentrated version of the Left. Nobody is allowed to be creative, clever, smart, etc. except him - literally.

It's a psychological sickness, but it explains the Limousine Liberal, Champagne Socialist war on perfectly good cars and roads.

Back in *those* days....we had manners b/c our parents had manners. Good manners and social graces were taught at home .....and reinforced in school and church.

Many families sent us for ball room dancing lessons with Mrs. Linder. She was a kindly, refined, old money lady who gathered middle class kids in her basement rec room. She guided a whole generation of pre-teen kids through the maze of how to sit in a chair properly, how a boy asks a girl to dance, how to hold open a door, serve punch and dance the waltz, fox trot, rumba. It was a *finishing school* for those who wanted to show good breeding, when out in polite society.

There was no *stroll*,*bop*, or *twist* for her tastes... *American Bandstand* and the birth of rock and roll, changed all of Mrs. Linder's teaching ...for those kids who had a teevee, anyway.

Public schools already provide all books and supplies, free breakfast and lunch, after school baby-sitting, clinics and psychologists, in addition to what we try to teach them in math, science, language, etc. ...

I was told, by someone who has children in a semi-rural high school, that the school provides class time day care for the infants of the students. I was stunned. In my mind, this sends the message to the students that it's acceptable to get pregnant while in high school.

I agree with most of the posters, manners should be taught by parents. Society also needs to bring back the concept of shame, certain behaviors are not acceptable.
