I just saw the video on TV.
I agree with you.
He saved a life by not shooting, but backing up with an assailant coming at you (with the suspect's hand in his pocket at one point) was extremely dangerous. While backing up, what if the officer stepped in a pothole and tripped? What if the assailant had a gun in his pocket?
I appreciate his desire to not to take a life -- but the officer seemed to expose himself to a high level of danger.

The cop did lose his balance and fall. Cop should have shot him when bad guy’s hand went inside his pocket and was charging him.
