When I was 17,(63 now) I was hunting jackrabbit outside of Yucca Valley and saw a windowless craft going right past me at about 20mph and 100-120 yards away. I wish to this day I had a rifle instead of a shotgun, I would have pinged it to see if it was real.

I studied UFOs for a long time (not much anymore), and I concluded that they are manifestations of a non-human intelligence or energy, and probably NOT interplanetary spaceships.
So a "ping" may or may not establish if the craft was "real," that is, not a figment of your imagination. UFOs sometimes behave like physical objects, sometimes like ghosts or phantoms.
I don't even like the term "UFO," because it suggests that the objects are "flying" in the normal sense of the term, rather than merely creating the appearance of flying, something like a spotlight on a cloud.
