Should meat be taxed like alcohol and cigarettes?

At this time of year, the last thing anyone wants to think about is paying more taxes. But there's one tax I'm in favor of - and you should be, too, if you care about your health and the health of the planet: a sin tax on meat, cheese and other animal-based foods.

Two people have now lambasted me for molasses and yeast!

Yes, I admit that molasses (well, sugar) is the basis of rum and yeast is the basis of beer. But in their naked state...yuk! Actually, Brewers Yeast is that English thing called Marmite. Double yuk!

Should we tar and feather politicians who think up new taxes?

I care about my health, but I don't expect anyone else -- including some government tax bureaucrat -- to.

Frankly, I don't give a tinker's damn about "the planet." It's old enough to take care of itself. And someone explain to me how taxing meat is going to make it any better anyway. All that's going to do is give more money to a government that can't manage what it's already got.

I don’t understand your comment. My point was eating and buying food is legal, but in this bimbo’s eyes it’s a sin that needs a tax .... but people like her never propose a sin tax on real infractions, only eating politically incorrect food.

Like wife beaters, drug dealers, child molesters, armed robbers, murderers, embezzlers, etc.?

One and only one of the crimes on your list involves no unwilling parties.

"Sin tax" is the term for sales taxes above the norm which are imposed on goods like alcohol and tobacco that were once considered 'sinful.' Taxing crimes is an unusual idea to say the least.

My point was that your list, while being all acts that are against the law, had one anomalous entry (which, involving no unwilling parties, would more appropriately be treated like alcohol and tobacco).

Dear Heather, why stop there? Why not tax air and water too?

Fortunately the Sun Sentinel is firewalled, so they can spew as much nonsense as they wish: no one will ever know it.

Which brings me to that age old question: If a firewalled website falls in the forest, does anyone ever know it existed, much less makes a sound?

Real question: is Wagyu or Kobe beef raised anywhere other than in Japan?

I mean, they’re farming Caspian sturgeon in Israel & no-kill harvesting the caviar, too.

If a man is standing in the forest and there isn’t a woman around, is he still wrong?

Okay. Whatever. I don't know what the technical definition of sin tax is and don't care.

My point was the liberal asshats are all about taxing harmless things like eating meat but would have a hissy if you taxed real crimes.

That's all.

Lots of wagyu and Kobe is raised in Iowa. Don’t know if much makes its way to Japan.

A loud call for luxury taxes would squash that idea.

It’s raised here and elsewhere, as well as Japan.

I had JavaScript off when I clicked through from Google news. They don’t have a very sophisticated block on nonsubscribers at the Sun Sentinel. I could not resist reading the story when I read the title because I knew the story would not have any meat to it. :)
